Does anyone know how the 17's Navigation gets its info? What I really am trying to find out is, will the Nav work in the middle of nowhere...ie no cell signal?

    Thanks in advance!

Factory Nav Map data (Entune Premium) comes from an SD card, no cellular service is required.

HD Radio signal for Traffic & Weather updates.
GPS signal for location to use in Navigation. Map detail resident in Head Unit.
So if you are in nowhere, navigation works fine but without HD radio signal, no Traffic & Weather updates.

Map data is stored in the head unit's internal storage. It does not require data/internet connection.

Your actual location is determined by the GPS unit, and the coordinates (along with calculated direction of travel, speed, etc.) are overlaid on the stored maps, thereby showing your location.

Yes, it'll work without a cell signal. It won't work in tunnels, and may have problems next to high mountains.

can't speak for the way entune works, but most modern gps units will predict where you are in a tunnel (or any other momentary loss of gps signal) based on your speed and the direction you were heading.

Is getting lost while driving in a tunnel a common problem for folks? :D

I used to think no, but the more I interact with people, the more I realize how many really stupid people are out there. I wonder how some people even make it out of the house without dying.
