I'm having my power steering pump replaced under warranty at 112k. The dealer is suggesting a 200 dollar system flush with some valvoline cleaner. This isn't sitting well with me as I figured they replaced the bulk of the fluid when they replace the pump. What do you guys think? I have the choice to do it or waive it.

The system only takes 3 quarts of dextron atf3 fluid. Lift the front of the truck (tires) off the ground and turn the wheel all the way to the left, fill reservoir, all the way to the right, fill reservoir, repeat, ect. The return line can go into a gatorade bottle while the system is "flushing."

edit: cap the return line on the reservoir with a 3/8" vacuum cap while doing the flush.

The reservoir drains with each full turn to the right and left, so keep an eye on it so it doesn't run dry.

On one hand your system might have debris and that's why they're recommending it at the time of the repair. Labor is a lot of that. If they're using oem Toyota fluid it might be around $10 a quart, so maybe $170 in labor.

It's your choice. Do it yourself after or have the tech do it at the time of the pump replacement.

I flushed mine at 18k (almost 7 years old at the time) and the fluid smelled burnt and was pretty dirty.

I definitely recommend doing this service yourself on a more frequent basis.

Ideally you want the fluid to be replaced ASAP.
But it really depends on how the pump failed.
If it was an internal failure, the fluid is likely contaminated with metal debris.
You don't want to pump that back into the new Steering Pump.
If the truck doesn't have a cooler, you can usually get by without a flush, as most of the fluid gets drain on the shop floor. (but still not ideal)
Trucks with steering coolers, not so much. You have to flush the cooler to get all the fluid out. (well, you should)

Thanks to all the replies. Love you guys. I'm going to have the flush done to keep the old gunk from wrecking the new stuff.

As an ongoing preventative service I routinely will suction the reservoir dry and refill when doing an oil change (not every time), it only takes a few minutes and the Dexron spec fluid is very inexpensive.

I have done this on vehicles for decades.

    Fuck no.

Also most replacement power steering components actually require the lines be flushed as part of the process.

    Aftermarket warranties usually stipulate it.

This is snake oil being upsold from a hungry dealer. Do not pay this.

I was actually questioning that when replying with my answer above.
I mean, wouldn't it be included in the price of R&R for the pump?
Same with A/C work......It usually included in the price.

Why they are demanding it be a separate charge, I have no idea.

yeah, I would've thought a system flush, after failure would be part of the "fix".

OP if nothing else, decline, have them fix under warranty, and find an honest independent shop to do it.
