My 2017 wants those cool daytime LED always on headlights where the daytime running LED is in a C shape surrounding the main light. Is this just a matter of buying a light that has that feature built in (plug and play), OR IS IT that because the 2017 doesn’t have ‘always on’ day running lights, some extra wiring work needs to be done?

If you want full LED (main and DRL) you need a harness from @Puppypunter and buy the Toyota OEM LED headlights ... $1600 for the lights themselves and more for a new harness from PuppyPunter.

Great information. But I have champagne taste on a beer budget lol! So all these Chinese made headlights with the C LED ring for $275-$400 - just not feasible?

The general consensus is OEM is best for what you are looking to accomplish. Aftermarket options can look cool at a better price, but folks tend to have a variety of issues with them over time.

Wait for Puppypunter ... the @ sent him an alert. Most times the Chinese-Crapazon knockoffs cause problems in the longrun. You may get TRD Offroad with just LED DRLs (but not LED main) from people upgrading to TRD Pro LEDs.

Buy nothing until Puppypunter or others can add comments. Good luck!

I am not selling my SR over headlights. So changing trucks isn’t in the cards (I just bought this 3 weeks ago and it’s paid for ;)).

Then you don't have any monthly payments. Think about it this way. Putting it the right lights, and the OEM LED's ARE the right lights, will run you what would have been three or four monthly payments if you had financed. The OEM LED's are the best lights you can buy and you will be that much safer at night. The improvement over the stock lights is quite stunning. The cheap Chinese crap are not only not road legal, but throw light in all the wrong places, cause unsafe glare to oncoming drivers and do not light further down the road than the lights you have now. It's all or nothing. Well, not quite. You can do the H9 bulb upgrade which will provide a marked improvement over the stock H11 Long Life bulbs and those are only twenty bucks.

Looks like H9 is the answer. I appreciate the information! Thanks!

Remove the green insert from the plug to fit the H9. Easy peasy.

@ExpertReader, I agree that OEM is the way to go for sure. But I am not picky who I sell harnesses to . If you wanted to do an aesthetic upgrade to the TRD headlights with Halogens (LED DRL, but the "L" shaped one), you can get a set for fairly cheap nowadays. Put some H9s in them, or go with the Morimoto (I'd have to refresh my memory which version is best. 2.0 I think?) or Hikari Ultra LEDs if you want that 6000K colored light. But I would avoid other LEDs, as stated before, they just don't perform well. I make a harness that can convert your SR wiring to accommodate the TRDs as well. And as an added bonus, it can be upgraded using the TRD conversion harness if you ever do get the OEM LEDs. All that said, if you do end up getting a cheap pair of headlights, I'll still sell you a harness, just reach out and I'll make sure you get the right one. But at $200, it might cost as much as the headlights themselves unfortunately.

Thanks. I’ll save your information. I’m putting the brakes on DTRL headlights for 60 to 90 days.

EXCEPT for now, I want to put H9 bulbs in existing headlights - and I’m confused on whether H11 and H9 are the same (?) and is the same H11/H9 bulb used for high beam and low beam? I buy on Amazon, and the sellers are unclear. I’ll google but if you know.,.

Chew. That was PHD level treatise on Tacoma light sources. *** ALL I want is for someone to point to a specific product on Amazon (link?) and say these are for low beams. These are for high beams. And you’ll get a much brighter white output. Oh and are plug and play (remove the green tab where necessary).

Normally I love being educated (I have an advanced degree). Really. But here- I’m simple - “me want brighter white bulb!” - “point me at”. Uga caveman level request.

Post number two of the headlight thread has the information you’re looking for. Phillips H9 is the top recommendation for low beams.

Someone on FB is looking to buy a harness right now, so I sent him your link here on T World. You strike me as the desired expert on this issue. Hope it works out.
