2017 Taco gas mileage falling

I used Maverick gas in my Honda Civic once and it felt like my car was going to stall. Burned half the tank and topped it off with 91, drove perfectly normal after that. Never filled any vehicle with gas from Maverick after that.

Definitely add some fuel injector cleaners and I would use better gas. My Tacoma is lifted with 33s and I average 18 mpg combined driving

I'm completely stock with my 17 sr5 and I'm getting anywhere from 23 to 27 mpg . But I do use the 87 from Marathon in my area.

 

I’m pretty stock (skids and topper) and I’m seeing ~14 MPG all city driving this winter. 16 MPG sounds nice…

2021 with 21k miles, tires at 33 PSI, slightly aggressive driving at 6,000 Ft in elevation.

Do you remote start your truck everyday?

 

I definitely hate the early upshifting. I wish I could change the shift points. I do use the ECT button from time to time but more frequently when I have a load or am pulling a trailer (occasionally).

Unfortunately there are a number of short drives. But at the same time there are several long haul drives traveling about 100 miles to see my daughter and grandchildren. Even with the long drives and a fill-up before leaving the mileage registers no better than 16 or 17 highway miles per gallon. With winter driving I expect to see (historically) 19 MPG. Summer time I routinely see 22 MPG. I'm wondering if they've degraded the gas so much that it's the cause for the low mileage. Wouldn't put it past them to make inferior gasoline and charge premium prices for it.

Anyway, for now I plan on driving ECT engaged for a full tank of gas with Techron in it and see how that performs. I have a second bottle of Techron ready to go with the next fill-up. So for now it's a waiting game. At present I have many hours planned in the woodshop. Very little driving expected in the next week or two. By the end of this month I expect to see my daughter and help move her into her first ever new house. It's still being built. And yes, she has done it all on her own. She's just like her mother; very independent.

 

4550 elevation at my driveway. Driving in the Rockys. Mostly valley driving. No remote start. Nice but not needed.

Our winter has been on average 15˚ below average daytime highs and around 10˚ below night time averages. This Friday we expect to see real close to average (52˚F). Don't know when they will switch over to summer formula. One reason for the winter formula is due to valley haze from the inversion layer. Above that it's warmer and clear. Below that it's choking at times. No, not Los Angeles.

Running a woodshop means sometimes frequent trips to the hardware store for some stupid thing I forgot the last trip there. But generally I'm rather light footed, and again, historically, mileage has been much better than it has been in the last 6 months. And I'm not counting summer formula. Oh, I also switch the AC compressor off fairly often. Only run it when I need to defog the windshield or other glass in the truck. Should help with mileage doing that.

 

Being semi-retired and running a woodshop from my home shop - I don't do much driving. And when we do family driving it's usually in the wife's 09 Venza.

 

Interesting report. Will look at big name gas stations for a while. See if that improves anything.

No. Same gas. Only difference is the wife drives the Venza.

Actually, when I drive it I can get 2 to 3 more MPG than she does. Of course she treats the brake and gas pedals like light switches. That's why I never let her drive when I'm in the car.

She was part of a van-pool for work. Everyone was required to share the driving responsibilities. They asked her to just ride and not drive. I know exactly why they said that. And it's also why I get better mileage than she does. Right now her average economy mileage is around 19 MPG. But if I were driving it - and I did drive it from Utah to North Carolina - I get 24 highway MPG.

 

I mean you just listed a ton of additional variables. Only way to tell would be say... you took her car to work in summer and got 22 and now you got 18. whatever she gets etc seems kind of irrelevant.

 

NW Montana here, warm up in the AM and drive to work typically between 65-70 mph. I average around 15-17mpg in the winter, depending on how long I let it warm up, if it's windy, or if I hit traffic.

Usually will get 19-21 once the weather warms up (with 4 ply tires). Tacomas are finicky. But I expected the drop in mpg due to tires and winter gas.

Mine is a Trd off-road DCLB, have a Prinsu rack, and Yakima bed rack, 10 ply studless snow tires, 265/75r16.

So my guess would be just bad batch of gas, longer warm up, windy conditions?

 

Just sell the damn truck and be done with it!

 

My 2017’s gas mileage plummeted to 16mpg and worse after I joined TW. It all started with just a little lift and larger tires, then I heard about Prinsu and Mobtown and learned what an RTT was…. Stupid website.

The dumbest questions are the ones nobody asked. Questioning things is the way to enlightenment. I don't know what RTT is; so I ask. Is that unwise? Must I climb a mountain just to find out what time it is every time I want to know? Or when I watch the weather forecast?
