Locks and deterrents like the Stant 10504 locking cap is more to stop shitheads from pouring stuff in the tank. Stopping fuel theft on most vehicles is actually somewhat difficult with the methods they use to steal it now. The pointless tampering, however, happens on occasion when you live in a small town with nothing for people to do but fuck around with stuff that they don't own. Unfortunately, Some of us also don't get much choice on where to park at work....

@JaCado Yeah I just bought Rovike Locking gas so hopefully I don't get a code for vapor lock but seriously I highly doubt someone whos stealing gas is going to have a drill bc if you're stealing gas then you're prob a crack head and would sell that drill and secondly, there's a metal skid plate over my tank so their drilling metal and plastic. anyways if there's a locking door to access the tank or a cap and its been pried then I know someone has tampered with the gas and now I can call AAA and have my vehicle towed to a shop and have it inspected before you turn on the engine and destroy it but this has gone too far with "what ifs" just saying its retarded that Toyota wouldn't put something as standard as button to access the door to your gas.

I have a CarQuest 10504 (rebranded Stant) locking cap. No CEL light in the 5 years. Just have click it 3 times when putting it back on. I work near a high school and am more concerned about keeping funny stuff out of my tank.

It is all but impossible to steal gas from modern vehicles unless you do drill a hole in the tank. No need to lock the gas cap for that reason. It might stop someone from pouring something in the gas tank that shouldn't be there. But if someone wants to damage your vehicle that bad they will find another way. I wouldn't waste my money or time on a locking gas cap.

You’d think they would do what Honda and Ford did on their lower end cars and just make it a smooth cover that locks with the car. But nooooooo. That’s crazy talk. Can’t risk reliability…but yet will keep adding more and more interlinked electrical components.

I’d be cool with them delaying wireless Apple CarPlay for another two years just for a locking gas cover.

Maybe the 6th Gen Tacoma will have wireless CarPlay and a locking gas cap. ::fingers crossed:: :)

You can put the another key in the gas cap and turn and the gas cap will unlock. Did that for a friend.

Yes, Toyota discontinued the locking filler door after the 1st generation sometime. My neighbor bought a 2nd generation and I was quite surprised that it did not come with a locking filler door. I was then also surprised when I bought my 3rd generation and it also didn't have a lockable filler door. The original poster I am pretty sure, only wanted a deterrent, not a fool-proof solution against gas theft, as other here seem to have inferred. The Meso Gasshole has nothing to do with the original poster's question either. By the way, I actually HAVE the Gasshole from Meso and it is really cool but has nothing to do with this question. A lockable filler door is a nice deterrent to gas theft, as well as just fuel cap theft too. Not fool-proof, but a deterrent, much like putting on a cover for the catalytic converter is only a deterrent, or an alarm system is only a deterrent.

I had a gas door release inside my Venza and loved it. I think it would be tricky to have one on the Tacos because of the separation between the cab and the box. Installing a cable would require more work than in a car. Just saying.
