I see this is an old post but I watched a video here of a guy pushing the air conditioning button, and two second later the light goes off. I bought a Brand new 2017 tacoma 3 years ago. The other day I turned on the air when leaving the house and it whistled/screamed Highggggggg, Lowerrrrrrr, lowwwwww, reallly lowwwww then stopped (like air escaping a balloon until empty). By the end of the street about 100 yards the noise was gone and now my air cond does not work it does just what the above video shows, I push it and two seconds later the light goes off. I took it to Midas and the guy said after having my car in the bay for an hour that he could not "fit" his air condintioning fiag tools to my system and that it was "R22" instead of R134 which was bolognie according to what I am reading here. Can anyone help me get this fixed correctly? Can I fix it myself with a simple relay replacement as I was reading? It seems to me the noise was all the coolant evacuating with some leak but I could be wrong. Thanks very much.

    He's likely out of warranty.

It's not R22 or R134, it's 1234YF, which is not cheap. Run away from Midas. I can't recommend paying for a dealer to look at it, but at least find a decent AC shop if you can.

Sounds like you lost pressure. Once, I had a stainless mesh fuel line wear through the A/C hard line. The compressor is sensitive and won't turn engage if the pressure is off a little, most certainly if it is low/empty. It could be a belt/pulley, or the clutch as well. Looks like you can find 6 cans 1234yf and a fitting (no gauge though- and you would need one) for about $90 online. First though, you would need to find out what is going on and if you have a leak. You can get tracing dye also to help find it, but it does make a damn mess. If you have absolutely no knowledge of HVAC, take it in. A/C work seems to be generally expensive.

Thank you all for your responses. Obviously I am not going to even try to fix this myself. I have 86,000 miles so I don't think it's under warranty but I will double check. I will find a place that specializes like you said. I have been souring the Syracuse/Cicero NY area for the right place, but none seem to give me confidence yet. With oppressive humidity this week I need the AC. BUT, I wonder will it hurt anything to leave it like that and live without the AC? Thanks much.
