Hey, new to the forum here so sorry if this was answered already. I just bought an Alpine R-A90s which supports line level inputs without a converter. It says you don't need to run the remote wire if using this option if the stock head unit meets certain criteria.
    Remote Turn-On Lead
    a. The head unit does not have a remote turn-on or power antenna lead.
    b. The head unit’s power antenna lead is activated only when the radio is on (turns off in the tape or CD Mode).
    c. The head unit’s power antenna lead is logic level output (+) 5 V, negative trigger (grounding type), or cannot sustain (+) 12 V when connected to other equipment in addition to the vehicle’s power antenna

Owners manual says that if any of those conditions exist, The remote turn on needs to be run.

Do you guys know if any of these are true for Tacoma's, I just got a 2017 and am not really familiar with the wiring yet. Also its a non JBL.

    Thanks

FWIW. I just installed (finally) my Alpine KTP 445 Mini amp behind the audio unit in the dash. Ran a separate 10 gauge fused wire direct from battery and separate ground wire. I do have the low level line converters but elected not to use them for simplicity reasons. I may install them as the audio quality is not quite what I expected.
I connected the remote turn on to a switched 12 volt source. For my application the amp only needs to "see" 12 volts; minimal current draw.
Sorry for the long post but wanted you to know what I did. Hope this is helpful and good luck with the upgrade.

You need to run a remote turn on wire. The line level inputs are just for speakers.
