Hey guys just wanted to give everyone a heads up on my truck, hopefully we can all learn from this and one day Toyota might do a recall...

This is at 118000 km and always doing regular oil changes and following the maintenance schedule meticulously...

Engine makes a popping noise at a stop light and then starts making a loud ticking noise at all times...brought it to my dealership where they informed me the engine was blown and I had three options:
1)buy new engine (26000grand CAD LOL!!)
    2) buy a used engine with 54000km on it and install for 12000CAD
    3) trade in the truck with blown engine and they would give me 10 grand CAD.

In the end wound up calling corporate Toyota and managed to get $3750CAD off an engine rebuild as well as a 2 year/40000 km warranty on parts and workmanship, so total bill $7300 CAD. They put in a new short block, gaskets, cover assembly and assorted parts, so a full rebuild.

This engine failure was in addition to a coolant cross over pipe failure last year that cost me 3 grand.

In conclusion this truck sure is costing a lot of money and I am surprised and disappointed; clearly the third gens are lacking in reliability. If you're thinking of buying one of these trucks get yourself a later generation and make sure you get the extended warranty; I sure regret not getting it.

I should also add that we got a second opinion at a friends shop and they diagnosed that cylinder #3 had bad compression. After that we went back to the dealership for the rebuild because they offered the discount and warranty.

Every Toyota employee we talked to seemed shocked but definitely not apologetic, and we had to fight pretty hard to get the discount on the rebuild.

But so what exactly caused the low compression? That seems like an odd failure

You might be able to lemon law the truck. Check with a lawyer.

How low did it get on coolant from the cross over pipe leak? Curious because it's pretty well an outdated diesel issue but low coolant can allow cavitation near the cylinder walls causing them to wear thin, especially if it led to a small head gasket leak that was never noticed

I caught the coolant leak pretty quickly, and fortunately it never dipped below the low line. That stupid plastic piece is metal in the lexus version of the engine though...plastic in the tacoma. so annoying.

This sounds pretty similar to some other failures we’ve seen around here. :(

Ya the fake "environmentalist" are for sure causing alot of problems for automobiles which run counter to their alleged quest to save the planet like ethanol, electric vehicles and plastic critical engine parts. By chance they send you pictures of the block and such

On a 6 year old vehicle, with 118000 km? Nah.

No pics. Feeling pretty disheartened about the truck, bought it because of its ‘legendary reliability’…hopefully this rebuild lasts a long time. I want to keep it a long time.

Sorry to hear, that is unfortunate for sure. I am curious if you had any mods likes a tune or anything? And what your typical driving habits are? Just curious.

No mods, bone stock. I tow a small dump trailer occasionally. Mostly highway miles. It’s cold where I live, like -30 in winter, wondering if this has something to do with it. No block heater

Absolutely hate that for you. Posts like this convinced me to keep my 2010 4 banger 5 speed. It's been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned (first car was in 1982). Best of luck!

Are you saying the wanted $26k CAD for a new engine?

If so, my move would have been calling a tow truck to take the vehicle to a different shop.

Going to trade my 3rd Gen in for a ford ranger because of this post.

I will not tolerate a non reliable truck.

Thank you for the heads up on this.

If your cylinder wall is cracked or scuffed then you will not be able to rebuild it. The cylinder sleeve in our engine is manufactured with the block and can’t be bored or easily replaced. (Correct me if I am wrong.) Are you perhaps talking about the piston?

This thread would be more useful and interesting if you detailed exactly what failed and what might have caused it to fall.
