Have you looked up engine failures on the new rangers? They are also out there along with most other trucks. You’re looking at small samples on these forums. I still like my odds with my 3rd Gen.

100% Tacomas probably outnumber all other mid size trucks in sales, so stuff like this is going to happen.(just in sheer numbers) I am willing to bet that as a percentage it's very small. I know it's no consolation if it happens to you. I'll still stick to Toyota and Lexus. Been with them forever and had very little issues. My 2000 es300 still drives like new. I am confident that it's at least a 500k motor.

Lol. Have fun with your "reliable" Ecoboost.

Bingo. Failures do happen unfortunately but like you said the squeaky wheel gets the grease. And forums tend to make it sound like there are a lot of problems when in reality for every person who complains there are 100 who say nothing.

Considering the sheer number of 2 GR engines out there in perfect health... This is a good bet

so is the F150 by far the most reliable half Ton since it’s reported failures are a very low % of their total population?

Yeah, every time I read an engine failure post on a forum, I trade.
I’ve had a new truck every 2 weeks just this year. Hard to keep up sometimes

Lol no. The Tundra, followed by the Titan.

2nd gen V8s anyways. About as simple as modern complex engines get, and both of them are way overbuilt for what they do.

I mean I see down to -40* and don't always use my block heater, plus I haul and tow atleast 3000lbs atleast once every two months and have over 110'000kms on my 2021, am tuned and even hit a deer around 50'000kms. No leaks or anything for me. Deer didn't even knock out my alignment. I was lucky I was only going 80kph and just caused front end body damage. Please do post more details if you can get them, even the service story work order. It could just be a freak failure because nothing is perfect especially when mass produced but it would be nice to know what caused this exactly. Hopefully the tech wrote good notes.. a failure like this usually makes that guys bay the water cooler of the shop cause everyone will be curious what happened

There are so many moving parts in making a vehicle. Suppliers you buy parts from. How reliable are those. If you think about it there's probably over a thousand parts in any one vehicle made by 300 suppliers. Also there are sections of the vehicle assembled by hand. So there are human error, component failure and even QA failures. Having worked in production in the tech industry I've seen my share of assembly line failures. So to your point Ford F150 is the most sold in its class, percentage failure is probably small. I lived next to my Ford loving neighbor for 20 yrs and they are a f150 family and he'll drive nothing else. Overall you look at customer satisfaction and cost to own. Toyota and Honda are usually top 5 and I am good with that. I ve owned VW and its been a problem it's whole life. I've also owned a few American cars that turned to junk after 75k miles. YMMV, but my experience of owning over 12 cars japanese have been on top.

i have personally owned vehicles and used leased company vehicles that if i had to give a rough guess, were driven a total of a few million miles. these miles were put on by me and others that owned/used the vehicle and the rough guess includes what was on the odometer, not just what i personally drove.

many of these vehicles were worked hard and not always meticulously maintained. some were downright abused, and some were driven long distances at high speeds and taken in remote areas many miles from paved roads or service. temperatures and weather conditions ranged from as cold as -30 degrees and snow, to as high as 110 degrees and sunny, give or take.

all these vehicles were mostly dodge/ram, chevy/gmc, jeep, and a ford or two. most were pickups but some were SUV's and passenger cars. all of them were driven at least 100K miles, some 200K miles, and one or two, 300K miles.

one of my favorite company vehicles was a jeep liberty. not one issue and the best performing vehicle in snow and ice i've ever driven.

over the millions of miles, only once that i recall was it necessary to have a vehicle towed. the fuel pump failed on a diesel pickup at about 100K miles. thankfully that was in town and not in some remote area. other than that, none of the vehicles broke down, left me stranded, or needed emergency repairs beyond maybe a battery or flat tire. none required major drivetrain repairs or engine tear downs.

with that said, two of the best vehicles my household has owned have been an acura and honda. next up is a toyota camry. they have been reliable, solid, well-built vehicles.

the reliability of the 3G tacoma that i currently own in tbd, and at this time i am not sure i will keep it long enough to make a judgement. i have said and will say this again, from a fit and finish and general feeling of quality, my 3G tacoma is one of the worst vehicles i have owned or driven.

the nature of any brand website like TW is that it attracts supporters. many of the supporters have had a bad experience with another brand, or so they say.

like any large purchase, i would do my homework and not hesitate to buy another brand vehicle. certain models or variations of ram, ford, and chevy would make the list, the tundra would not if for no other reason than its appearance. i find it ugly af.

i hope the 4G tacoma is better but given toyota's recent track record, i have my doubts at least for the first year of production. the new Chevy/GMC mid-size looks promising, if only they offer it with a 6 foot bed.

I did some mechanical work for Magna the automotive parts supplier. They made flexplates and reluctor wheels among other gears and rotor type parts. They made parts for a lot of manufacturers, Ford, GM, Dodge, and Porche to name a few that I remember. The hardest testing and review they went through was for Toyota. It took well over a year of trial parts and factory visits by Toyota (very serious people who didn't smile or converse with the general population of the plant), looking at everything from employee training and absenteeism, ages of machinery to how clean the floor was under some of the hobbing (gear cutting) machines. They did end up making a few parts for them but not as many as the other companies. Suppliers make a difference but it is up to you to ensure they make what you want at your standards. Toyota's standards are above the rest, at least when it comes to flexplates. I hope the OP's problem is an anomaly and probably is from what I've seen.

I would do some research on this before jumping ship.

A coworkers EB just blew up at 120K miles, and he is meticulous on maintenance.

If I had to buy a midsized vehicle right now, it would be a T4R.

Not trying to make up your mind for you but i feel obligated to speak.. i've been a GM tech for 8 years, they drive nice and have great creature comforts, are easiest of the American's to work on but don't get a half ton. Trust me you will encounter frequent major engine work that may or may not fall under warranty. The canyons and colorado's are okay for reliability but honestly for American vehicles I would pick Ford. And nothing American that isn't a body on frame type vehicle, Japan has the unibody type vehicles down pat. Just my 2 cents from someone that doesn't have a favourite brand but throughly loves the 3G tacoma sans the back seat space and fuel economy but hey there is a compromise for everything and I can understand why they made those.
