Rear axel bearing failed at 120k. Is this normal? This truck is 4x4, has only been used off road a handful of times and biggest tow load was a lawnmower trailer.

It does happen, but it’s not common at your mileage of 120k

$1,400 to replace both, I’m guessing that’s the going rate‍♂️. I just figured I’d get more miles out of Toyota before problems start popping up.

What are the symptoms / how do you know it failed?

Load roaring at 40mph the roar was pretty bad! I thought it was my tires at first but when I put new set of tires on and it still had the bad roar I knew there was a internal problem somewhere. It actually started vibration in steering wheel on the day I took it to the shop for diagnosis.

Personally I would only do that one side if the mechanic diagnosed it as a bad rear bearing. All new seals. And make sure the brake shoes & drum were not exposed to any oil

The mechanic said the right side was the problem, he said the the left was ok, but it did have signs of damage, idk, I just said replace both of them and seals and put new rear brakes on while it was apart! $1,400 was cost but I guess in today’s world, that’s ok. I have not had to have any major mechanic work done in years.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

Normal, no -- common yes, it happens from every manufacturer.

Toyota (or any auto manufacturer) doesn't manufacture bearings, they purchase them by the millions.
With that number of parts you get a bad one (or bad run) now and then or an assembly issue in the factory. Either way fix it and drive on.

The quote sounds quite high, you might want to shop around.

Make sure the mechanic doesn't scratch or wreck the casing when they are replacing the bearing - or you'll be having them put in a new axle next.
