OP, are those the stock Firestone Tires on your SR5? If so, sounds like they did OK in the snow? Down in Georgia we don't get much snow, but when we do it shuts everything down... Debating swapping out my Stock Firestone tires with an all terrain tire...More for offroad than the snow, we don't et enough snow to warrent snow tires

Great points. The TRD Tacomas really are impressively capable and comfortable machines right off the factory floor. The enthusiast crowd tends to be drawn to the platform for that reason, and those people are the first to rush to spend more money on modifications. I agree that the current state of modding on the forums is haphazard and geared more toward form over function, but over time I would expect the serious enthusiasts to start sharing good information and doing more quality technical work on the platform. A few of the builds in the 3rd gen build forum are already really impressive.

I'm always surprised at how much some forum members advise people to not actually use their Tacomas as designed. The towing threads are full of people suggesting that no one tow loads over some fraction of the towing capacity, which is nonsense. The tow rating already includes ample safety margin, so tow anything up to and including the limit and you'll be just fine. The engine and transmission threads are full of people warning against high engine RPMs, which is also nonsense. The engine is designed to function well at any RPM and the same engine is used in other applications with higher redlines without issue. Rev the engine to the redline all day every day and you'll be fine. Really, these trucks are well-built and capable. Use them as designed and enjoy it.

As for the stock TRDOR tires: They were better than I thought in the snow, but they still fall short of real snow & ice tires in the winter. If you're only occasionally driving in snow then they're not a bad choice, but I still felt like real snow tires were a significant step up for snow and even more so on ice. Everyone has to weigh their actual driving circumstances, of course, but keep in mind that no all-season will perform like a dedicated winter tire on ice.

4x4. It was a good 6" of fresh wetish snow over ice though so 2 wheel wouldn't have made it I don't think. That being said I've driven a lot of places with snow in 2 wheel only, depends on the kind of snow really.

I'm a fan of all weather tires myself so I can run one set year round.

OP, I agree this truck had no issues in the snow last night, drove home about midnight and a few roads had not been plowed in while, had about 4 inches or so and 2wd all the way home.

It was to late to mess around, but in due time I'll get some fun time in.

Youre either trolling or have never had real snow tires.

I agree with whoever said thier subie was better. My wrx wagon was so balanced and fun to drift. It was a 5spd so it was 50/50 front and rear. There is a bit more intervention required with the part time 4wd. The vsc is quite good though. Tail starts wagging, and "Brrrrttttttttt......brrrtttt" the worlds loudest abs pump get you straightened right out!

I've had both DTs and dedicated snow tires. The DTs are just as good as snows in the deep stuff. But in shallow snow or slush...I give the edge to the snows

Yup. I haven't touched the stock tires because they are brand new. I'll put a couple thousand on them and then switch to the KO2's.
