Subaru AWD and Audi Quattro are so freaking awesome in the snow. Way more predictable than my Taco.

I have Ko2's and they are great on desert and mud, not sure how they handle in the snow but I will soon see as I am gonna head out for some cold weather camping!

Once you get in to really deep snow the tire doesn't have as much of a chance to bite in to the surface, so big mud-tire style lugs can do well. In the type of compacted, icy snow conditions you see on more traveled roads after the deep snow has been compacted down, the better compound and tread pattern of the snow tires starts to pay off.

From my experience in the snow (grew up near Buffalo/Rochester), I would say that on flat ground a 4x2 can survive snow. The mountains, though? That's a whole other beast. Now I'm not sure what Toyota did to the Pre Runners as far as compensating for not having 4x4... Honestly a 2WD Off road truck seems silly in my opinion, but that's just me.

If you want to venture into the mountains, bring a buddy with you. Preferably one with a winch.

On my last truck, I had Wild Country XTX Sport's. They are all season AT's, but they also meet the requirements of a severe winter tire. I will be putting those on my Taco once the stock ones "wear out".

Main roads, sure. Not so sure about off road trails. :p

I regularly fantasize about Mattracks on my Taco.

I would only go into snow with Chains available on rear wheel drive.

Depending on the conditions, I would agree. My dad had a 1997 RWD Dakota and all he did was winter tires and added about 100-120lbs of scrap iron near the back of the bed and he did fine. Then again, we didn't have too many hills to conquer and the roads were well taken care of.

RWD on snowy mountain trails (even with chains) would be asking for it IMO.

Nothing too serious but found some white stuff today:

First time in 4Lo and finally got to try out the MTS/Crawl features.
Didn't really need to use them but fun to try them out!
