People of the internet: Any ideas?

The ticking increases with RPM and I can hear it inside the cab. I do not believe this is the HPFP. Vacuum leak maybe?

Truck has 1500 km's on it. Taking it to dealer tomorrow.

Idle also seems to go up and down on its own.

Sounds like a tacoma. They all since forever have ticked liked that. That's how you know they are running correctly. For the RPMs fluctuating at idle, it's probably from switching back and forth between direct and port injectors (google "tacoma d-4s").

It does sound normal, but while Toyota motors do sound like a reliable old sewing machine, you may be picking up on something the rest of us can't hear in the video.

If you're noticing it at idle after the motor is warm, look in your manual for an explanation of the "injector cleaning cycle" where the truck enters an injector cleaning cycle that sounds like multiple sticky rockers tapping for about 15 seconds to a minute. I hear this cycling mode engage about once every few hundred miles.

It's not the cleaning cycle, as when you hit the gas and even while driving I can still hear it. Sounds like a misfire to me.

If it seems abnormal, take it to the dealer to diagnose/fix under warranty.

Has it always made this noise or is it new?

Just started maybe a few 100kms ago. I'm bringing it to dealer now for a diagnose and will update. Purred nicely when I bought it.

Misfire would trigger limp mode, so that's not what it is.

Cant see the video since I'm at work, but vacuum leak would cause either a higher than normal idle rpm or a bouncing idle rpm. Do you have either of those?

Sounds normal up until the 26 second mark when you have the camera above the passenger side bank, not a clue what it could be. Do you have the defrost turned on? if so the idle fluctuation is the a/c compressor cycling to dry the interior air.

Well tech said all is well and normal, I swear it wasn't this loud before but what you going to do? He did fire up their test vehicle for comparison and was the same. He said its the spring on the injectors due to the high pressure and they all make this racket.

I'm glad you got it all figured out. It's probably nothing but I would keep an ear out to see if it gets any louder.

My 2017 is doing the same thing. I could here the heads ticking when brand new while the hood was up, but now starting to hear it inside the cab while driving. I don't really like it, I have about 1000kms on it now and it wasn't making the noise for the first 850kms. As for the idle moving around, that is just the ac pump turning on and off, and man does it engage hard... shakes the whole truck. My tonneau was on back order when i bought it, so i have to go back to the dealer to have it installed when they get it... I am also going to have them check the noise as well. Its probably my only gripe with this truck so far because the noise annoys me. Brand new trucks shouldn't make this noise.

My 2018 sr5 is ticking like shit. Maybe that's why the salesmen had me turn in radio when test driving? I don't hear the cleaning cycle kick on and off like everyone is saying, mine is a constant tick. Never goes away at idle. Seems like I hear it in the cab easier than outside the truck.

do you really think a random salesperson at a Toyota dealership would notice the ticking in the car?

or is it more likely he wanted you to test out the radio?

I’m having the same ticking sound with my 2018 SR5, the sound is at idle and during light acceleration at low speeds seems worse going up hill but I’m sure it’s not pre-detonation or spark knock, sounds more like lifters in an old truck at cold start but it doesn’t go away when the engine is warm just a bit quieter. The truck only has 400 miles on the odometer, I’ve had it only for a little over a week, I plan taking it in this week to get diagnosed, has anyone else been able to confirm whether it’s a vacuum leak or injectors? I thought the pre-existing TSBs would’ve remeided these issues before this 2018 model year.

Mine has the same issue and it’s a 16. I didn’t buy it until March of this year and I noticed that ticking shortly after buying. Pretty much same symptoms, going up hill I feel like I can hear it more.

I’m due for a oil change soon and was going to ask them, but please keep us updated.

    Hello!
We have a 4 month old Tacoma 4cyl (sorry in advance for posting in the v6 thread ), ~1600 miles and are trying to figure out if the sounds are normal or not! Brought it in after 48 hours of owner. All focus was on ‘is the check engine light on?’ ‘Then nothing is wrong’. Had them turn on another Tacoma which did not have the same noises. Here are my audio recordings.. one from under hood, one from left front tire wheel well.
    https://youtu.be/41p0NBNjVMA

Still trying to get a consensus if it is ‘normal’ or not.
