More than I can count... most problems I've dealt with on ANY vehicle I've ever owned. Have been under my truck, in the shop more in the last 10 months of owning this truck than I have in the last several years combined.

It's working out well now though and I am finally enjoying it, so that's something. I just hope the tranny issues, crankshaft sensor, loose bolts all over the damn thing, etc., were caught (mostly by me - dealership was worthless). Definitely get that transmission fluid checked properly, make sure you have the latest transmission TSB (ECU update) and with that build date it's probably not a terrible idea to shell out $100 to keep a spare CKP (some on the forum refer to it as a CPS) sensor on-hand.

Mine seems to have a mind of its own

Sometimes, it will just hang around 3000 RPMS at 60. I'll let off the gas, or give it a bit more to see if it shifts. Sometimes it just takes literally a minute to straighten itself out

Thanks! For now things are working well and I'm enjoying my truck. More concerned the issues with fuel mix caused by screwed up timing the first 10k miles on a failing sensor caused premature wear on my power train and emissions (cats). I still log 2-4 misfires every trip from a cold start, though no load seems to be associated to them. So either I have a slowly failing gasket, catalyst, they are false positives bc it can't sense misfires accurately, or the truck is intentionally misfiring to heat up the catalyst... one far reaching theory I've heard.

Good luck to you! They are fun trucks and we're designed reasonably well... the software and QC were not up to par however with some batches

I mean...I suppose i could ask the dealership, but I'd probably get a run around.

I've also noticed that from a dead stop, when applying gas I hear a small pop in the rear and a small shutter through the gas pedal, It's pretty quick and lasts maybe a second or two. The truck is still so new to me that I'm just learning what's normal and what's not

Unless I'm in ECT between 75 and 80 mph with cruise control on it will sometimes nearly redline as it shifts into a lower gear. I have a good dealer, so before we go to San Diego (850 miles), I'll take it in. I can't imagine driving over 800 miles like that. Around town, no problems, and in ECT it's ok on the freeway. I would have got a manual, but you can't get an ACC with a manual.

I think you're right about engine and transmission life. If I'm not in ECT on the freeway and there is any incline at all, it shifts constantly. I'll take it to my dealer, who are very responsive, but I doubt that they can do much about it. If they can't then I'll look at aftermarket options.

I had posted last year that my truck was shifting like a "drunken epileptic monkey", that is a good way to describe the issue. My 2017 is doing just that, it's at the dealer now with 4500 miles and they tell me that's normal which is BS.

I have a 2017 sr5 a/t v6 with 6,000 miles on it. its been in twice for shifting issues and now about to get switched out for another truck bc it cannot decide what gear it wants to stay in. constantly shifting and has no low end power. it honestly feels like a weak 4 cyl. vs a 278 hp engine. I am barely getting an avg of 15 mpg. very sad since they advertise 19-24.

The dealer told me that this is normal operation and there is nothing that can be done.

My 2017 jumps and jerks, can’t figure what gear to go to. Downshift hard when stopping. Feels like it’s starving for fuel and when you accelerate it down shifts hard and lurches forward. Dealer says it’s normal. I’m glad I leased it. Last Toyota I will drive. Junk in my opinion.

Corporate still purposely short filling all the fluids at both TX & Mexico plants. The savings adds up with 200 K trucks a year going out the door.

I've found the trick to this truck is to DRIVE it. and not let it drive you.

If you're trying to keep your MPG's up then you're gonna have a problem and should probably buy a corolla.

I have a 2017 Tacoma TRD off road, 8100 miles and my transmission seems to shift erratically. I have noticed that it will shift from 2 to third fine with plenty of torque (most of the time) but when it shifts to 4 it will drop from about 2500 RPM's to about 1800 and the hold for a brief second then drop again to below 1500 RPM. I assume it basically skips 4 and goes right in to 5 gear. The net result is an absolute loss of power so much so I start to slow down. I then have to give it more gas to get it to downshift and accelerate. I noticed this when I bought the vehicle but figured it was just because it was new and "stiff" so I figured I would ride it out to see if it improves. I also don't use cruse control because my MPG will drop from about 18.9 to below 16 due to frequent down shifts.

I have an appointment with my dealer tomorrow to have it looked at and I have read, but cannot confirm, that there is a TSB to address a problem with the shift points. Is that true? I plan on asking that the transmission level be checked but is there anything else I should ask about?

    Any insight is appreciated.

    THIS!

I have a 2017 Pro, with 285/75/16 tires..... Part of me thinks its the tires, but the truck does some weird stuff on the highway, and my MPG goes to COMPLETE trash.
