Let me know how that goes. I also can't use cruise control unless i'm going 75+ and hold 6th.... I have to almost force it into 6th.... I've been driving on long trips where im getting 19-21MPG, with my larger tires, and a roof top tent, and then i have to slow down behind a semi, and then I cant find 6th again, and get 9MPG in 4th....
I then throw it in sport and try and force it into 5th or 6th, and it shows 5th, but never shifts.

I will let you know for sure. Toyota was of little help they just created a ticket for me that then forwarded to my dealer. I think my truck goes into 6 when traveling down the thruway but I am not sure i have not payed attention. What I do notice is, while using cruise control, a drastic down shift when the slightest gust of wind hits my truck. If you don't know its coming it can make you think its going to take off like a rocket.

Was there a TSB for the ECU update or was this something they just did when you took it in?

If you put in S5 it will never see 6th, S-mode limits the transmission to the gear shown in the center display, not indicate what the gear it's in. If you put it in S5 it will shift through gears 1-5 automatically but still indicate 5 on the display and never go into 6th. It only goes into 6th when in D or S6 and conditions are optimum to select the 2nd OD gear, usually meaning light load, level terrain. If more torque is needed to maintain speed it will kick down to the 1st OD gear (5th) or even down to 4th if more power is needed.

Truck is not like a 6 speed manual or manu-matic where you can force to or keep it in 6th.

Supposedly the main reason the engineers ruined the power trane in the 3rd Gen was to improve the MPG.

It's a low torque 4500lb truck with throttle by wire and a slush box, what do you expect?

Not experiencing any trans.issue shifting or on the highway. I’m in the northeast - no problem on a cold start in 15 degrees in the morning, shifting from P to D than on my way to work.

There's a whole thread on this. "Normal operation". People here will just tell you to keep your foot on the brake.

The 'S' doesn't mean "Sport"... it's the manual option so that you can select which gear you want it in. Once you move it over there, it won't shift on it's own. I'm a bit confused on what issues you are seeing there.

** Edit - this is incorrect so please disregard!

Just drove my new 2017 sports from La Paz Baja Mexico to Alta Wyoming aprox 2,500 miles . I am having the same problem with the transmission , I set the cruise on 75mph and when i come to the smallest incline it kicks back to 4th and seems to get stuck there . Love the truck but hate how it drives .

Mines still doing it at 6k miles. I might bring it up with the service tech soon... But in the meantime I'll just continue to scream "Oh quit hunting for the damn gear" and go about my day.

It will too shift on its own, S mode limits shifting to the highest gear you select. S3 = 3 speed Auto, S4 = 4 speed auto, S5 = 5 speed auto etc

I have a 17 sport...shifts all over the place, cruise will drive you crazy, up and down, revving and idling....Ive had it 6 months, has 2,000 miles on it...rather drive my Odyssey with 200k on it.....dealer is no help, I asked to move up to a base Tundra, same price, twice the payment....offered me $30 k for my truck..letters to the owner, toyota customer service...no response so far.....supposedly has the latest flash, service and sales acknowledge the problem...I really want to love this truck, 42 years of Toyotas, 8 so far....traded the best truck Ive owned ('oo Tundra)for the worst...sucks because I know it could be fixed....
If nothing else, Ill pay for the reflash when I can....but for now....anyone want to take over a lease?.....
