Get a ShiftSense Pro... it will fix your shifting issues and you can install it without messing up anything so you could take it right back out when your lease is up.

Although people complain about spending $800 to make the truck right, the answer is OV Tune. It is just so worth it. I hated the auto so much I traded it for a manual. I have now OV tuned the manual and love it. Not a sponsor, just a happy customer.

I've seen a bunch of use 16 and 17 Tacomas at the dealership now. Pretty sure it will continue to grow. Sad.

I drive a 18 Tacoma. I feel the transmission is a ok. But with this newest model. It does shift quick! When it comes to downshifting? Is smooth tho. 40k truck. And it performs like this? BS!

Is there a TSB number for the transmission fix you all are talking about? I've had a 2017 TRD Off Road for about 1.5 years now. I've had this transmission problem all along. It can't decide what gear to be in. On the freeway, especially in traffic, it will downshift 2 or 3 times then upshift once. Seems like it want's to take off in 3rd gear with no torque, then downshifts until nearly red-line. Dealer says it's working normally. I had a 2nd gen that I traded for this one. I loved it. Should've kept it. It only had 256K miles on it.

I have an 17 trd OR 4x4 and had the same problems you guys are describing erratic shifting, high RPM's even clunking into a lower gear when coming to a moderate stop. I took it to Mossy Toyota in San Diego where I originally bought it (shady sales practices but thats a different story). After telling them the problem they said its working properly started to research it and found this site and people talking about the TSB updates then I went back to Mossy and as soon as I mentioned the TSB updates that ive been reading about they all of a sudden woke up and said oh yeah lets check that and sure enough it changed it for the better (so you definitely have to tell them that you are aware of any updates because they wont voluntarily do it or let you know because its not mandatory) a few months later after finding out that a lot of the trucks are coming off the line with low transmission fluid so taking it back there to argue with them (because its a sealed transmission) to check it and sure enough they say it was was low a 1/2 quart. So after I get it back from them it starts to act funny again like as if the computer was never updated or they erased the TSB updates from the computer so I ask them about it and they say they didnt do anything to the computer and that there is nothing wrong so I ask them if they can reflash the tsb updates and they say it cant be done because its been done already once and that its working fine. Fast forward a few months I take it to another toyota dealership Franks Toyota in National City and they have it for the whole day and call me up to come get it and they say that their computer says every thing is fine and that they have detected that their is some misfiring and that its because "I must be using cheap gas" I said that I get my 91 octane gas on military base (the same that all the military vehicles and other tacoma owners use) and the service writer says 'You gotta stop using that cheap military gas and use something like shell gas etc.' It was a bullshit statement blaming it on me and not to mention that it didnt matter where I got my gas. A year later after thinking I wasnt going to get anywhere with any of the dealerships I decided to try one more time at Toyota Chula Vista and talked to someone that actually explained everything in good detail and actually had the mechanic to really check the computer and found out that the computer was 2.5 tsb updates behind 2 for the engine and 1 for the transmission. So it looks like that Mossy toyota had definitely did do something to effect the computer and that Frank's Toyota nation city are just idiots trying to blame it on the customer and using cheap gas. Now it working a 100% better but still get some minor shifting issues hear and there. Moral of the story is make sure you are on them about TSB updates and watch out for them trying to bullshit you. There should be consequences for them trying to cover this up with so many trucks having this issue.

Revived a 3yr old thread! It was freeway, and I've since had a tune done so it doesn't do that anymore.
