    Hi!

I notice when coasting at around 30mph and then stepping on the gas (rather aggressively) the rpms go way high but the truck doesnt accelerate (sometimes it will catch right at the end of the engine revving and give a little kick)

Is this a dire warning from my transmission that its going to fail soon?

    edit: SR5 V6, 85k miles

Before you do anything ,get the trans fluid changed wit Toyota fluid and then go from there. If there is not a large amount off metal it could be a pump

is this typically an easy fix?

Generally speaking, if the fluid level is full and it's slipping the trans is likely toast.

That being said if it was my vehicle I wouldn't gamble on a expensive repair by trying to diagnose it over the internet

Find a transmission place you trust and pay them to verify what's going on. Avoid any place that offers to look at it for free

When running WOT from a stop or low speed roll, does it go into second crisply, or act like it's slipping? Same q for 3rd.

If that's good, what happens if you ease into the throttle a bit coming out of a coast, then stab it?

OP, did this just start or has it always acted this way?
You could also try driving in S mode to hold a gear, so you’re not confusing a higher gear with an unlocked converter. From what I’ve read, our TCs are allowed to run unlocked/locked in the lower gears, something like 3-6 gear.

Not sure if this is relevant but I thought I'd share, maybe it will help identify something down the road.

When coasting at stop-and-go traffic speed (5-20ish) and coasting/decelerating, the transmission seems to go into like a neutral position. Then, when I gently apply the accelerator, I will watch the RPMs climb maybe up to 13-1500 and then the gear will catch. It doesn't happen any other time, just from decelerating going from maybe 2nd or 3rd to this neutral position to then applying a light amount of accelerator. Think of a Rolling Stop. It won't happen every time, seems random. The only other roughness I feel, is if I'm coming to a stop, it's almost like the gear doesn't want to let go and go into neutral. Right when I'm about to stop, it clunks into the neutral position and I no longer feeling whatever that is engaged. It's happened for as long as I can remember and dealerships say it's normal. Drives fine other than that.

    Good luck

The truck goes into neutral(rather the torque converter unlocks) when you coast. The rpm raises because the transmission is slow to respond to throttle due to Toyotas piss-poor transmission programming. My trucks done this since new. I guess it might want the RPMs higher before re-engaging the TC. It’s a large part of this trucks sloppy throttle response.

Thannks for all the responses, sorry if i dont directly respond to all of them.

Its done this for a few years, always felt like just a slow response in the gas pedal. So the basically the transmission is disconnected when the truck is coasting, the engine rpms slow down, and it wants higher rpms before reconnecting it? (sorry for my limited understanding)

Yes. Change your technique to the 2nd para of post 5 and tell us what happens.

ya if i cruise then give it a little juice before i step on it, it will accelerate the truck. so it doesnt seem like a transmission issue, just an annoying design bug (feature)

Auto transmissions blow in my opinion. Even though I bought mine with one because of my wife ( who after I got it that way for her ) drove it maybe twice. Most of my trucks have been manual
    Two Tacomas Manual
    1996 &2001
Then I had a 2003 auto ( which I bought due to deer wrecking the front and wrecking the 01)
I loved the 01 but was on the fence with the 03, I just didn’t feel the same.
Then I had two Nissan Frontiers
Both manual 06 &11 these were both great trucks also just very rough and harsh but overall problem free
There always seems to be some type of snag and it doesn’t matter what brand you buy .
    Change the fluid
    Don’t change the fluid
    Torque converter lock up
    Sensors
    Tranny coolers
    TSB for shifting
    Learning mode

one big pain in the ass

I'd be sure to use only Toyota ATF as it seems they are finicky what ATF you put in them. Years ago I used a different ATF in my Toyota auto that was suppose to be recommended to replace the Toyota stuff. Some weeks later the transmission began shifting weird. It was the ATF I used. The tranny needed a complete flush, and replaced with the Toyota stuff. It was fine after that.

For the sake of curiosity, which Toyota and ATF?

What's the trans shop going to do besides drive around and say yes or no? They aren't going to take a deep dive into the transmission because that would be too costly
