I recently purchased 2017 TRD and while driving in city with hills I have had issues where waiting for light to change and roll back a foot and there is loud clanking noise coming from transmission i think. I have read several reviews and putting one foot on the brake and the other on the gas to prevent rolling back an inch or two can't possible be part of the design of a 4x4. I have never had a car do anything like this and wondering if this is a recall issue or what. Some say it might be ABS. Hard to believe that a truck is not made to drive in city hills without using emergency break or brake peddle to prevent any slight rolling backyards. Any solutions to this? or what might be the actual problem?

I’m going to go on a limb here and say that isn’t normal, nor should you let your car roll back that much. I think rolling back a foot is a little excessive, I’ve taken my truck to the SF and the most it rolled back on really steep inclines was a couple inches as I was quick to apply enough gas to get it going after releasing the brakes.

well maybe not a foot, but any slight movement backwards while in drive creates a loud clanking sound. it is an automatic and now I wish I purchased a stick shift

It's normal. I had it happen a couple times with my auto depending on the hill (steeper grades are worse).

Normal. Hill start assist. Same noise will happen when u use crawl control as well. Do u get the blinking light on dash when it happens?

This can’t possibly be normal what if I were to go off road not in four-wheel-drive and be on a hill and slowing to a stop and roll backwards a few inches and then here comes the loud clanking noise

It appears your truck is broken.

You can either run with that or accept what people have told you.

Or you could read your owners manual - which explains hill start assist control in exquisite detail.

It could be your ABS unit working hard. If you start to roll back, some people will hit the gas a little too hard and will break traction.

    All,
Went to the local dealer who has a very steep ramp and we tried this 4-5 times and of course the braking system worked as designed when rolling backwards while in drive. It came down to where I was describing a grinding sounds the 3 times or so it has done with me, and then of course it was a softer sound probable as designed. Just so the service guy didn't think I was crazy he asked the service tech who works on them and he said I was about the 4th or 5th person to come in with the same complaint. Just got to wait until it does this again and I will capture sound via cell phone...:(

Been there done that: took my 2019 Tacoma to the trails two weeks ago, and it did it every time I started moving from an incline.

I assume it is the hill start assist. But if it is, why would it allow the truck roll back in the first place? Never mind all the alarming lights and groaning noises the truck makes.

I keep being told I need to learn how the truck operates.

Been off-roading for 10 years; never seen such a ridiculous system.

Try turning off the traction control. Pretty sure it solves the issue. Your truck is rolling back in drive that’s a loss of traction. When it’s off your good.

I believe it is the Hill Assist as well. This happens to me when I pull out of my parents driveway on a steep hill and try to drive up the the street without pressing the break pedal “long enough” before shifting to drive. It was concerning at first until I figured out what the hell it was. It also did it in my 4Runner as well.

Abs and traction control are two different systems. The truck knows the wheels are rolling and not "skidding" because the wheel speed sensors are showing movement. Not loss of traction.

This one is curious. Comes up from time to time. Here's a good reference thread on the topic.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/what-is-your-experience-with-hill-start-assist.459729/

The enhanced brake booster system that accommodates crawl, mts and atrac is the culprit for the strange hill start assist behavior. Why exactly the behavior is strange and perhaps the opposite of "enhanced" over the standard system is the curious part. I'm sure someone at Toyota knows.

The vehicle registers it as a control issue. Turning off traction control solves the issue. At least in off roading scenarios.
