Sorry but this doesn't make sense. I'm always down to learn something new though. How does that work?

it sees the vehicle move backwards when you're telling it to move forward. so it applies the brakes. the traction control system monitors wheel spin through the wheel speed sensors. it regulates by applying brakes to each wheel it thinks is slipping

But there is no wheel spin, wheel spin is calculated by monitoring the speed of each wheel independently, if they're all moving at the same speed, no need to brake that wheel. That's what's confusing me.

that's just the general operation of traction control. in this situation's case, it sees accelerator input from you, but the truck is moving backwards. if it lets you apply throttle while the wheels are moving in the opposite direction, it'll break loose, therefore losing traction.

So it's predicting traction loss? Then what? Like how does that explain the noise?

from what I can gather, it's a combination of the relays clicking and the electronic booster actuating

hill start assist is part of the traction control system. it's just Toyota giving what I described a fancy name

I am as baffled as you are.

In my experience, Hill Assist does just that: holds the vehicle for 3 seconds by applying the brakes to give the driver time to start moving forward. That's it. No drama involved.

It seems Toyota has over-complicated this simple principle by allowing the vehicle to roll backwards, and then adding flashing lights and groaning noises while the system tries to correct the initial roll back and inevitable loss of traction.

In my books, it's not really hill start assist. I work for VW and their hill start assist is literally holding the brake for a set amount of time, or until you touch the accelerator. This is more like giving a flaw a name, so they don't get shit for it

I think it's more complicated than that. It supposedly works well on other models excluding the OR and pro if I remember correctly. I think it's an issue with crawl control and MTS not playing well with the "booster" purely speculation tho.

"Works well" as in holds the vehicle stopped until u apply throttle to move forward.

afaik non-OR/Pro's don't have the electronic booster, which crawl control uses. the truck makes the same noise when you use crawl control

That is true; it is the same godawful noise.

They should call it Roll Control, since it is the same crap but rolling backward instead of forward.

I think the ones without the electronic booster actually work and don't roll back, no noise.

Yes-Subaru’s are similar too. As long as it’s working it holds the car in place so you can accelerate without rolling.

On the Tacoma, I literally was stuck on a small incline with a sharp turn-lights going off everywhere. Then it clicked that the “traction control” was causing issues. That’s why it shuts it off when using the “advanced” off road features.

That’s a simple way of putting everything not the technical. Cause That’s the best I can do.
