Ive been checking the forum for any answers but haven’t really found any. After a recent rain, steady but not heavy, I have a very strong moldy wet carpet smell coming from the front passenger floorboard. I was not able to locate any wet carpet. Last year I had the same problem and after a few days or rain, the carpet on the passenger side was wet. I’m afraid there is a leak, but don’t know where. Has anyone else experienced this problem and know of a solution?

Check the upper column to see if its wet, we have a drainage tube there that could have come undone.

I have a second gen that would occasionally do the same thing.

Possible windshield leak, or maybe the fresh air inlet?

Water runs down the cab, settles in the floor. Foam and carpet absorb the water, whatever it can’t will slosh around if enough gets in there

I mean if he has a sunroof I would check that first. But he didn’t say he does. Another culprit would be a roof rack if he has one added. If no sunroof or rack and the brake light is fine, then it would be a windshield leak.

Best way to check is run a garden hose on it for a while in different points. See if you see any clear signs of a leak with that or hear any leaks and trace them to the source

If you have a roof rack, 99.999% likely that's your culprit. If so, drop some silicone sealant in the roof holes

No roof rack either. And the brake light area is dry. There is a spot at the bottom of the windshield where the rubber strip seems to be pulling away from the glass. It’s directly below the driver side wiper in the center of the window.

I don’t seem to get the leaks when I wash or get it washed. Only when it rains. And in Southern California, that’s like once a year.

Put a garden hose on the truck and have it run for 10 minutes or so in the spot you think the leak might be. That’s what we did at the dealer until we found the leak

Did you buy used? If so, you might check under the roof gutter strips to see if it had a rack at one time.

Check under the truck to make sure that your floor pan plugs are all installed and sealed. Specifically, I think there's one under the passenger seat, that a lot of people wire their pop and lock through.

Maybe water is splashing up through a hole while driving.

Just another thought....my FJ would get wasps in the AC drain hose. Not sure if it is in the same place in the Tacoma, but those guys would make a nest in there and clog up the hose. The over flow would come as water in the passenger foot area.

This happened once to me when the truck had about 2000 miles on it parked on a slight incline in the rain. Toyota had no answers, but it also hasn't happened again and it's been over a year.

Check your AC drain tube first.

Maybe your passenger had too many cold beers and took a leak while you were not looking
