OP is think too much, i have family too. And one 75lb husky mix, by the time i almost get 4R, you are right, same price but it's 2016, after test drive, taco wins. Never regret, op should try it, i felt taco is more comfort than 4R, and taco is more flexible that you can add on a lot of gears you want from after market to suit your life style.

Don't listen people said, believe yourself ....

i have just under 500mi on my 2017 Tacoma, for my region KBB value on fair price is $35.5k and i got mine for $34K. so far i have had no issues with the transmission, i drive 3 other adults every day to work in a shipyard and they have no complaints about the back seat area, but with that said i am thier ride so they may just not want to complain about it lol

Agree with others that have posted here. Dont feed into some of the hate on these forums, take it for a long test drive and if you like it then go for it. I personally love my Tacoma and while I am in the same situation as you I dont use the bed every day but I'd rather have a truck then a SUV. Also just realize the transmission learns your driving habits so after you put some miles on it you wont notice much of what people complain about.

So far mine is doing great. It definitely isn't a fire breather like the tundra, but honestly it does well around town. I get 19ish and it is fun to drive. Transmission does shift early, but it's still learning and breaking in as I have around 400 miles on it, but it is doing way better than when I brought it home.

Thanks for all the help and advice. After a lot of thought and extended test drive (rented the truck for 24 hours and racked up 200+ miles), I am the proud new owner of a 2017 TRD Off Road. I have wanted a Tacoma for over 10 years and I am very happy with the truck.

    Stay safe and have fun,

    John
