good advice , ive been pretty impressed by the offroad performance on my trd off road out of the box, one thing i will say is a new rear bumper isint the worst idea considering its made out of plastic and i did break the drivers side piece on mine once

    Sub too this

A lot of good insight on the whole overlanding hype. Personally I feel it's become the new hipster thing to do is to say that you overland vs I went camping. Because camping is so 2015

I think overlanding is more specific to camping off the beaten path... in non-specified camping zones.

Beautiful truck and exactly what I'm planning on doing with mine (overlanding)

Second favorite color, first being my Quicksand haha. I'm still working hard to get my truck how I want it but totally agree with everyone about not needing certain accessories. It is true some of the stuff I have I do not "need" like all my lights...but I've always LOVED LED lights, or lights in general.

I've got about a 3" lift on mine with 285/70/17 and love it. I think it's the perfect height for me and will never go higher. As far as aftermarket bumpers, look into doing the hidden winch mount I believe it's called. Love to have a winch but don't need the heavy duty bumper. With my tires though I'm looking into options for swing out bumpers, preferably aluminum since I'm not happy with the spare being under the bed due to its size.

I have Demello tube sliders, rattle canned them black and am super happy with them. Saved my doors and quarters a couple times already. When I first got this truck I took it camping in some not so tough trails backcountry beautiful area, set up my site, started a campfire, setup my 2 person tent and roll up air pads in the bed of the truck and had a BLAST! I believe that's what a taste of Overlanding is, I'm hooked!

Most important man, build your truck how you see fit, have fun and take pics! No regrets!

    Snugtop Rebel order placed today.

    • Sportsman Reinforced Roof (Rated for 500LB)
    • Roof Rail (tracks only)
    • Fold down front slider
    • Pro lock
    • Electronic Lock
    • Tube light
    • Sliding Windoors on both sides
    • Includes headliner (black carpet)
    • Color matched

The plan is to sleep in the shell, but if the short bed is too uncomfortable, I will move to the rooftop tent.

I originally expected to get sliders and more skid protection, but my next trip will not involve any off-roading that will require that level of protection.

I do want to add a CBI rear bumper with tire swing. But I'm not sure when I will do this.
I need to purchase another wheel and KO2 full size, which will be kept in my shell until the bumper is purchased and installed.

Prinsu Toprac is also on the radar.

Learn to camp before you learn to overland.

I backpack regularly and have learned how to travel with the bare minimum of what I need. Remember the old adage- "guys who laugh about ounces cry about pounds". My wife and I just got done living in the woods in Colorado for 10 days with two backpacks worth of stuff and had a blast.

I've been to a few TW meets now and some people bring a tremendous amount of stuff with them that they don't need. Is it nice to have? Sure. But they have to carry all that stuff around. Our trucks already get garbage for gas mileage and when you're going on long trips the difference between getting 18mpg and getting 11mpg is very noticeable. That extra weight is very noticeable on trails too.

I love looking at the pictures of the instagram 'overlanders' as much as the next guy. I like seeing bed racks with maxtracs and rotopax all strapped to the side looking cool, and suspiciously clean shovels strapped to the other side. I like RTTs. I may at some point have all of these things on my truck. But you can bet your bottom dollar that I'm just doing that because I think it looks cool, and will ONLY do it if I can maintain my ability to wheel because that's important to me. Those things are not necessary. Get some survival skills and lower your bar for 'comfort' and you can go anywhere on this planet with a Tacoma and a dream.

Or, if you don't actually want to ride tougher trails and instead just want to park the truck and car camp somewhere, more power to you, add all that weight and have a blast. If that's the case you can probably get by with less recovery equipment.

This is really an exercise in being honest with yourself about what you want to do with the truck. People have been doing what we call 'overlanding' for decades, often with nothing more than a VW and some bedding.

Right. The places I like to go camping at, while doesnt require a truck on 35"s with lockers, will still need a truck/jeep to make it through. Even some of the fire service trails a subaru outback/crosstrek would bottom wouldn't make it.
