I test drove an 2009 SR and a 2007 Sport. Both were over 140k and felt as tight as the 3rd Gens that I test drove / bought. Yours is still breaking in. ;)

what are the signs of this "timing chain cover leak" that I need to monitor? didn't know it was a thing!

Look for oil under the front of the motor. Most say that they don't even have drops on their driveway. There have been a handful of threads about it. I believe the root cause was improperly applied liquid gasket where the timing cover spans over the joint between the crankcase and heads.

Thinking about this, I wonder if there is an external fix? Heavy cleaning and a material like Threebond / Form-a-Gasket, but made to patch externally?

Of course, we lived for 10s of thousand of miles with a weep from a joint in the crankcase layers on our volvo. Pretty harmless except that the car marked its territory on the garage floor. Too small of a volume to even register over an OCI.

My truck is about a month old. I built a subwoofer box and used some rubberized undercoating spray that I had sitting around to paint the box. I didn’t realize that it would smell like asphalt. Ha ha, totally ruined my new car smell. The smell died down after a few days but not as good

Yeah, after driving a lot of dusty roads, eating burgers in it and letting a couple silent ones go into the seat, it just doesn’t drive like new anymore.o_O

passenger side. Can’t really see it from top view unless you know exactly where it is. And if you have a skid plate you might not see it from under. If you drive a lot of fwy. The wind might spread it And you’ll never see it until oil change.
Also, I don’t know if is a California thing. But if you don’t tell them that is dripping to the ground. Toyota doesn’t consider it a leak and they won’t cover it.

Heck, all our 4.3 astro vans had leaky front crank seals doing that....the gm dealers all said it was normal...just but something under the van there if you don't want drops on your floor.

The folks that we talked to said that the volvo leak was unusual. And, all the fasteners to check were covered by the oil pan, which would need the motor hoisted to pull. Just lived with it.

In PA, it would have been good rust prevention. :D

    I mean is there a Taco collector out there that has a '16, '17,'18'19, and a '20?

I would love to know how each year drives. I'm just confused because people have been harping on the trans for years yet this TFL video on the '16 he says the trans is "really smooth". So what is up?

I wouldn't be surprised if someone trades up yearly. I would be surprised if they hung around these parts though. No time to have any real issues or probably even care.

There seems to be an odd amount of inconsistency between Tacos. Add that to the inconsistency and varying sensitivity of individual owners and that folks generally only post about problems on a forum, then we are going to hear a lot of different stuff here.

All i can say is my gen1 tundra used an aisin transmission and it was smooth...the 2020 takes some miles to work the same, just more overdrive. I have no idea why all the complaints unless its related to changing the vehicles tire size thats outside of what toyota designed them to run with.

I had a 2016 TRD Offroad and now have the same truck in a 2020...it drives better...the shift points are better for sure and I had all the TSB's done on the 2016. It is quieter too which probably helps feeling like it drives better, they improved the door seals etc and you can tell every time you close the door. It still has a few of the quirks of the 2016 but it is a bit better

If your driving a 2020 you probably won't understand the complaints, there was a noticeable difference in how the transmission performed in some of the other years, at least my 2016 was noticeably different than the 2020

Yep have had every year except 18.

There is a drastic difference in the smoothness after the software update in 18 or 19. My 16 and 17s were a bit scary at times from a dead stop trying to merge, etc. 16 had the stupid lunk hesitation from reverse too. 19s and 20 have been flawless, 20 is noticeably quieter with the seals and glass change.

Ditto for me. My '19-OR was in the shop because there was a rub/glitch with the driver side window and I got a 2020 OR for 2 days. Identical behavior so far as I could tell.

Haha, I had a 2016 and just got a 2020 as well. Yeah, I feel like I have to slam the door every time I shut it. 25% of the time at least in the beginning it doesn’t shut all the way.

2020 Shifts Way smoother than my 2016. I love it. I had all the TSB’s done but still coming up to a stop sign sometimes it would just downshift harder than it should, etc. You get used to it and I’m not super picky so it didn’t really bother me but it was definitely noticeable. My wife definitely noticed and assumed that it was because it was a truck because her Camry was smooth. Oddly enough though my 2016 definitely seemed faster.

I went from a 16 to a 19, I feel like the 16 was a better truck fit and finish wise but they both drive and feel exactly the same.
