Hello all, First post here, considering buying a 2017 access cab 4wd with the 2.7 and 5 speed. Will probably go with the four because the cost of these trucks with the v6 is getting out of hand imo, also, there seems to be quite a bit of dissatisfaction with the new engine/auto transmission combo. Haven't had the chance to test drive yet, any comments on this engine? Had a 2001 SR5 with 3.4 and manual, loved it and regret selling.

You won't find too many complaints from us 2.7L owners. The only issues we have to deal with are a slight backfire on some start-ups, as well as many idiot forum members who like to dis the drive train to help ease their 3.5L pains.

When you first drive it it seems underpowered, the shift throws are long and the clutch engagement point is narrow and high in the travel. In other words it drives like a truck, but the clutch engagement was annoying. But as the engine breaks in and you get used to driving it it becomes much better. I was regretting it a little the first few days, but now I enjoy driving it. Oh ya.. the engine is bullet proof.

2.7L is an awesome engine.. extremely reliable.. switch to Mobile 1 0W-20 full synthetic. It will outlast probably the majority of modern cars built today. I had a 2014 4 door prerunner AUTO... I came from a V6 wrangler before that and yes it was a noticeable change of pace so to speak at first, BUT once I gave her time to break in the truck woke up and I also realized to push that throttle more the 2.7L likes to be rev'd up, it will go whereever you want it to and then some. I now have a 3.5L 6 speed MT because I traded my Prerunner and my harley in for it and got a decent deal to reduce my high payments I had for the two vehicles vs having 1 vehicle now. If it wasn't for the then 2 vehicle payments I would have kept the prerunner. I hope my experience helps you out.

210K mls, never done anything to it, just regular maintenance. Still the original clutch, and I do pull a light trailer from time time.
It has been very reliable, as it was the first Toyota truck that I had, a 1964 Toyota stout 4 cyl. 4 speed

I came from a 2015 Colorado with the V6 down to the 2.7 - I knew what I was in for but the 1st few times I pulled out to pass someone and saw a semi coming at me head on, I learned just to pull my jets back and not be in a hurry. That V6 in the Colorado would pin you back in the seat when you passed someone.

It's bulletproof, very low maintenance, really torquey (for it's size); a really great engine!

Limited wheels, extra rope hooks in bed.
I had a 2.7L for 251,000 miles....Good dependable engine. Needed a head gasket when I sold it but it was running

With that being said I was going to pick up a 2016 2.7L automatic one weekend, even told dealer I was coming, it was sold to me.

I decided to look into a V-6 because it got the same mileage and twice the power......couple of weeks later I had my V-6......25+ mpg and I really like my choice...The engine/transmission is quirky but it's growing on me.....Would definitely do it again.

I had the 2.4 in my 99 taco, a 2.5 in my Suzuki Equator truck, and a 3.5 in my long bed-double cab 2016 taco. The 4 cylinders were good as daily drivers...not racetrucks but fast enough if you got on it. I wanted something to pull a 5000 lb load rarely. The 4 cylinder trucks were good enough to pull regularly a 2000 lb load but slowed down too much with much more. I did pull 3000 lbs from Los Angeles to Chicago 10 years ago at about 60 mph (28 mph up the steepest few miles before the big pass in the Rockies on I-70.

I have the 2.7 5 speed and I love it. Enough power for around town and even to pass. Very happy with mine. I feel like they nailed the gearing and power. I have ZERO regrets

Cant go wrong with a 2.7L and 5spd. If I'm going to have a rev happy engine in a truck it's going to be an I4.

I love my 2002 2.7 gen 1 4X4. It gets great mileage & is super, super reliable. With 200,000 plus miles, doesn't use a drop of oil & still going strong. I'll never sell her. Thing is gen2 & 3 are much larger vehicles & I feel the 3.5 is now really the only viable option. IMHO

Thanks for the great info, sounds like a solid engine, buying this to haul stuff, don't really care how fast it is. Now I just have to find one, nothing but higher end models here in Salt Lake. If they won't order what I want I'll probably head out of state. Lots of good deals on Cars.com
