The 4th gen 97hp 4x4 regular cab Toyota pickup SR5 (best body style imo) is gonna be my next project I think. Full restoration.

Its just sad when i think of tacoma i think 4x4 AC and thats just not the case anymore. Its becoming a straight luxury vehicle, some of the people ive run into with the TRD Pro or Off Road say they’ll never take it off the streets they got it for the look. what a waste

Tundra Double Cab is technically an extended cab with a proper sized Bed and has plenty of Interior room.

They aren't utilitarian small trucks anymore. They are heavy duty minivans with a bed and available 4x4. Now I believe the cheapest Tacoma that you could buy would be about 24k when I got mine in 2009 they were advertising single cab, 5 lug trucks for $12999 brand new at the dealer.

If the new 2.7 trucks are grossly underpowered how did people get by driving trucks with 22r engines and 95 hp. That's half of what the 2.7 makes.
Have you driven a manual 2.7? The auto 2.7 2nd gen trucks were dogs though.

I break my neck as well...everyday because my buddy has one. This gens body style would have looked legit in a regular cab. The lines on my face reflect my disappointment that it doesn’t exist. For us forever bachelors, there are no more bachelor life tacomas. While I am glad Toyota provided you with an option to have a Toyota that fits your needs... what will the rest of ah shit I don’t even care. Yeah it’s a shame BUT I GOT THE LAST OF THE LEGACY BUILDS BITCHES WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Tacoma manual trans 4cyl 4x4... “can my kids come?” NOPE call a babysitter “what about my dog?” Leave him a bag of Doritos. I don’t care “will we ever break down?” Fuck no. It doesn’t know how to. Iron block with forged guts made in Japan... Honestly this is the last Toyota pickup I’ll buy. I’m hoarding parts as we speak, I have a garage full of stuff for my 1st gen, in a few years I’ll have acquired enough for the third. I’ll be driving it, god willing, until I die, like my grandfather did with his. I don’t wanna drive an electric vehicle. I don’t wanna drive anything I can’t shift. I don’t wanna drive something that can override my commands. I think we’re at that point where our input into vehicles is intentionally being taken away, and for every bit taken, it becomes less fun. So if I needed another vehicle, may as well be a fucking Yaris.

The 17 2.7 isn’t underpowered imo, like others have said its not gonna win any races. After moving from an v6 6 speed, it seems like it but after driving it for a few days its just right great shift points and smooth. Even does hills just fine took it all over Shasta, any issues turn the Ect on. Overall great truck so far.

Itll still have its haters though lol.

Im in no way hating on the full cabs btw, if you have a family they’re great. No kids in my future though just the pups, so no plans one getting rid of this one anytime soon, just need mod money

    Different focus.

Tundra is marketed for payload, towing capabilities and power to compete with domestic fullsize where the Tacoma is marketed as a midsized "lifestyle" vehicle, to take a certain amount of your stuff to places others can't go and have fun doing it.

Like it or not, Tacoma is now more of a Jeep competitor than a work truck solution.

Mini truck market is gone in the US for now, people as a whole want "more" truck for their money.

I get that the Tundra and Tacoma are completely different trucks with different purposes.

What I'm saying is, if Toyota is nixing trims that don't compete/sell compared to everything else, why even make the Tundra? If you look at sales numbers for September, Toyota has sold as many Tundras from Jan to Sept as Ford has sold F series just in September. Toyota holds 5% of the full size market.

Tundras don't sell, why make them?

(Well really, who the hell buys a Tundra other than previous Tacoma owners?)

Yea I think he's right. They make the slow selling tundra in the same factory as the tacomas so every tundra they make is lost capacity to a Tacoma.
I'd say they just make a few to say they do. Like back in 2000s when Dodge lost money on making cars but did it anyways so if a ram buyer needed a neon for their daughter.
Also the tundra is already designed and in production. They now only come in nicer trim models.

Why make a 4Runner and a Hylander or a Sequoia and a Landcruiser?

    Different markets.

Tacoma isn't the truck for everyone despite what many feel here.

The market is killing the stick shift, with a big helping hand from companies that decided to stop supporting it. (or feign "support" by putting stick shifts on shit trim levels so people stop buying them, then tell everyone that no one wants stick shift anymore.)

That said, there's really no reason for a car to have a stick shift these days. A well tuned auto does almost everything better. The performance option really should be a dual clutch transmission. But alas US buyers don't like those.

Agree. I have a 2016 2.7L 4X4 AC Automatic and it is geared higher than my old 2X4 2006 AC Manual Transmission. And seems to have more power. I normally drive it in S5 mode since 6th gear is a little too tall and when in 5th in the Auto I am doing 2400 RPM at 70 MPH where my older 2006 would be doing 2600 RPM in 5th at 70 MPH.

I think the auto and drive train on the 2.7L is better set up than the V6 is on the 3rd Gen. Also in S5 mode I get 20 to 22 MPH real world mileage

    Bump,
Unless you’re planning on dessert running or being a highway speed demon the 3.5 doesnt offer that much more, I believe the tow load isnt much higher on the 3.5 either unless you get the tow package. The 4cyc auto is just right imo, plenty of low end torque and in 4 Lo your going wherever you want to
