Does anyone know, for sure, if TPMS from a 2018 T4R will work with a 2012 Taco? I've done some research on the issue and it seems like the answer is no - different codes I guess? Even though they use the same frequency? But there are enough posts saying yes it will work to make me wonder.

Thats the thing, I've heard yes and heard no. Something about different codes that the Taco ECU cant read?

Ive never dealt with TechStream but I think Im going to have to buy a cable and jump into it now

That was interesting. The ones I got off that 2018 are definitely the solid version like he is showing, so maybe there is hope

I guess Im going to have to bite the bullet and dive into Techstream, if I can figure out the install.

Does anyone have any resources or a guide walking through the install that you can link to? Been looking around this morning and haven't found anything great. But not sure if Im searching the right terms.

I do know I need to buy a high quality cable. Any recommendations on that?

@tonered can you point me in the right direction for reading up on Techstream install basics and a USB cable recommendation? Been reading through a few google articles this morning, maybe Im just overthinking it.

Hope to install on an old Win 7 64-bit laptop I have kicking around

    See the 1st Post here:

Any good USB-Mini cable will do. There is a max length somewhere? 50ft, 100ft, or something silly like that.

It's1995 OBD tech, so just about any computer will work. I had it on an old Win7 laptop that took 10min to boot up. It worked perfectly fine.

Thanks bud, Ill give that a read through  Based on other research Ive done it seems like the Tactrix cable is well regarded compared to some of the Amazon stuff so thats the route Im going to go.

Its funny, I can turn a wrench pretty good on most anything. But something about getting into Techstream makes me nervous :D

    You're welcome!

Yes. The Amazon clones are okay for diagnostics and customizations if you can get them to work. Some folks have noted driver issues and such with those.

If you intend to flash an ECU, you want a genuine Tactrix.

Only flashing the first time or two should be a worry. Other functions are similar to what you can do with an ODB scanner. Of course, there are some powerful functions in there, like the ability to program keys, do tests, and such.

Tactrix cable should be here sometime this weekend. Hope to get everything installed and see if the truck will read these 2018 sensors.

Pretty sure Amazon has the same kind the truck uses for $25/ea or less. Might even be cheap as $8.
I put one in after I accidentally broke one swapping tires and had Costco program it with their universal tool.

I have sensors in 3 different vehicles that came from Amazon. Cost varied between $60-$80 for a set of 4. If buying individually they cost a bit more. I had to buy a 5th one for my 07 Tacoma since it has one in the spare. They have been in 2-5 years and are still working. No issues at all.

Amazon sells different brands. These are what I have in my 2007 Tacoma, pretty sure you need a different model for a 2018. But this brand has worked well for me.

    Amazon.com: MORESENSOR Signature Series 315MHz TPMS Tire Pressure Sensor 4-Pack | Preprogrammed for Select 270+ Japanese Brand Models | Replacement for 42607-33011 | Snap-in | NX-S008-SN-4 : Automotive

On 2 of the 3 vehicles I replaced the sensors proactively when buying tires. They were still working, but I knew the sensors would die before wearing out those tires. No extra charge at that time to install them then. The other was a Wrangler that I bought with aftermarket wheels that had no sensors when I bought it. Tire store charged me $10 each to install those.

Im always a bit skeptical of Amazon for auto parts given all the knockoff crap out there. That said TPMS aren't critical - I would consider going that route if I cant get the 2018 sensors I already have to work for my truck.

But I already have them sitting here so Id like to try them first. Was hoping to get Techstream installed this weekend, but didnt have any time. Shocking I know.. :annoyed:

To answer the original question... the "direct fit" TPMS sensor for a '12 Tacoma, also works for an '03-09 4Runner.

The "direct fit" sensor for an '18 4Runner fits nothing but 3 years of 4Runner... oddly, not even a 3rd gen Tacoma.

The confusing part could stem from using a multi-fit sensor. There are sensors that can be programmed to communicate in one of many protocols on a frequency, or even some that can do multiple protocols on both 315 & 433mHz. With one of those (and a way to tell the sensor to change protocol, assuming it can be changed & doesn't lock to one on initial programming) then yes, you could use the same sensor on both vehicles, even though they're otherwise incompatible.
