I get the frustration, but you got transportation, and its getting fixed at no cost to you. With how everyone is having supply issues unfortunately it is what it is.

Any major teardown and rebuild is only as good as the mechanic doing the work. I have complete confidence in my dealership as I've taken the time over the years getting to know these folks. Give your mechanic a chance to do the work necessary then drive it for a while...then make your decision on whether to keep it or not.

Tough spot to be in. But, you already know whats best for you. Follow that path and don't look back. After the fix, it would still linger in my head and bother me too. Whats to stop it from happening again. Do we like the trucks, sure but really its just a vehicle you can get another one.

For reference my boy was 3-4 months waiting on a complete new engine for a 2020 4runner.

There are parts issues nationwide across all industries. The plannedemic allowed millions to stay home with extra unemployment benefits and many states extended those benefits for many more months than were necessary. Industries are just now getting going again. Parts made overseas are not immune to the balckash of the "the vid" either.

Your frustrared.......I get it. I've got equipment in my warehouse falling apart......service company constant excuses are "no parts" and "I'm short staffed". I signed a contract for new lifts and reach trucks back in feb........delivery date is november......of 2024!!!!! The Country is in shambles!

This is an awesome place to be. I’m glad I joined this forum when I did a few year back when I bought the truck. I really am have a hard time with this and all your support and suggestions makes the difference. I know it’s just a thing no a person, but unfortunately I “loved” this truck and spend so much time and money Into it. Maybe that was my mistake. Please wish me luck. I keep posted when I get further news.

Why not look for the gasket yourself and have the dealer reimburse you , I did that a few months back when my master gasket kit was on “back order “ with no eta . Just a option

If it makes it past 5K miles after the repair, IMO, it is likely fine. I would really like to know what Toyota thinks of this failure though. For the valves to burn, there would need to be some pretty serious issues with the valvetrain to allow the exhaust valve(s) to hang open. You would think that this would show as a misfire well before the valve burns. As mentioned by someone else, if you don't regularly rev the snot out of it, that will help your chances of making it last.

Well yes sometime I punch it getting on the freeway. I believe it shifts at 6k when punched I’m not sure. But I don’t race it or anything like that. Just an occasional punch here and there. Gas is too expensive to be hot rodding. Besides it’s not a civic. I talked to service director just now. He’s going to personally hunt down for me. He said If I get the parts on my own they have to be from a Toyota store with genuine parts or warranty won’t cover it. It will come with a 30k warranty after repairs. Did I cause this? Does anyone else “punch it” ? Like to time a 0-60 or pass a car on the freeway. I thought the transmission shifts before damage red line can occur. If hitting the pedal hard caused 4 valves to burn then this is all my fault. I did find a few other 3rd gen on here with the exact same failure on was #3 other was #1 cylinders and one guy only has 35k miles. I wish there was a way to pool on this forum to find out how many members had this failure

Your fault for buying a third gen Tacoma. Besides that, no, it's a defect.

30 k warranty on the repair is decent . It does seem like you have a good dealership . I think the truck will be fine if they do the repair right , and based on some of your conversations with them they will.
I’ve done this kind of stuff my whole life , and if you know what your doing it will be fine.

On stock tune I hit the rev limiter at least 5-6 times.

When I tuned, I was pretty much redlining it every day for few weeks, 6500/6700 rpms (redline is 7250, I never hit that)

Now I have added a bunch of weight to my truck so it lives in 2-2.5k rpm range. Drives amazing at 35k miles.

This is NOT an engine rebuild, it's a minor top-end repair on one head. Pull the head, replace the seats, guides (probably), on #3, drop in new valves and re-install. Mechanically, other than there being a few more pieces involved, and valves not being wear items, the brake analogy is a very good one. I would be upset too, were this my truck, but I would not be worried about the repair. Despite all the bashing of dealerships, for the most part the mechanics that work there are pros, and take pride in their work. The problem with a forum like this is it concentrates all of the negatives in a very small area, making things seem a lot worse than they really are. Definitely agree with trying to source the gasket yourself, but ensure it's genuine OE, not some Amazon or eBay 'Toyoota' gasket!

Il a acheté une troisième génération, la Tacoma connue pour ses problèmes de transmission. Pour cela il est fautif. Le moteur défectueux est la faute de Toyota, et il porte la responsabilité de le faire réparer.

Oh I assumed that had been the cause of your confusion seeing as you're up north.

Are you ignorant or just screwing with me?

I still would like to know why it was a mistake buying a 3rd gen.
