It has to be tough. He started 18th on the grid which is pretty far down the start/finish straight, so he was carrying more speed than cars further up the grid. The cars were stacking up at the turn, which had the effect of moving his braking point further away from the corner. It's a pretty common issue -- smoke pouring from tires at the back of the pack in Turn 1 is a pretty routine sight. Still, he really clobbered Alonso which means he just wasn't paying the kind of attention he should have been.

 

Leclerc was definitely saved by the Halo , you can see in the slo mo video contained in the Sky F1 tweet that it was the floor that actually landed on the Halo and not a tire mark

I still don't like the look but I can't argue with it being able to support an F1 car landing on it.

An argument could be made that the (rollbar reinforced) intake scoop might have prevented contact with LeClerc's helmet even without the halo. But maybe not.

I'm a convert.

Nope, it just looks that way from that video and the stills. The newly released 360 taken from LeClerc's hood shows that it was a tire. Advance the incident frame to frame and the floor clears the halo. Not a mark. Makes you wonder where the marks came from because it appears Alonso has cleared him. Then advance a couple more frames and the tire hits.

I'm not sure why teams wouldn't be doing this alread and why FIA even needs to approve. Something akin to DOT spec rear lighting during low visibility conditions should have been mandatory and accepted long ago. What team wouldn't want their cars to be seen through the spray to avoid costly and dangerous accidents?

 

They already have great big red light rectangles on the back of the car specifically for low visibility situations. The wing lights will augment that light.

Haven't heard anything outside of the lung transplant was successful. Going to be a long road of rehab though and he is going to be on a ton of meds now from it.

They were reporting that when he had his transplant he only would have lived another week at the most (had a donor not been found)
