Hey everyone, I was washing my truck the other day and noticed these two rust spots on my frame. They are in the same spots on both sides. I was wondering if anyone else has seen this with their truck or how I should I go about fixing this?

    Thanks for any help

Probably had tie down chains during transport, hit it with the wire brush and then paint.

I think you're doing pretty good with 18 year old truck.

Spray some fluid fluid on both sides of the frame rails, inside and out, holds up better than you would think, sprayed mine 7 months / 8,000 miles ago still looks like I just applied it, not a speck of rust yet, avoid getting the stuff on rubber components though since it’ll cause them to swell and crack over time.

Also you can find it at basically any hardware store in an aerosol can, shouldn’t take more than a couple of cans to cover everything.

Only went off the vehicle description on the OPs profile and forgot about the title.

Oh and as far as fixing this existing rust I’d just remove it with a coarse scotch brite pad and WD40 (cleans and prevents dust from going everywhere) should get it down to bare metal again, may need to wire wheel it but it looks to me like light surface rust, you could top coat it with rustoleum, I’d buy a brush on rustoleum though as opposed to a spray can, it’ll hold up better.

Thank you all for the advice! One more question though, with the truck being less than a year old should the dealership be responsible for fixing this?

Sorry about the mix up hacksawmark, I didn’t think to change my profile before posting but it’s fixed now.

I’m not sure what the dealership would say about it, I think they’d brush it off as normal wear if it’s surface rust but it if its rusting through I’d say the dealer owes you a frame repair is the rust present on both sides?

No worries, it was actually my bad to jump to conclusions like I did.

GL with the dealer on this one. They'll probably say they're not responsible as it looks like the frame was gouged a little bit.

You could shame the dealer into fixing it, but I’d just buy some black rust paint and do it myself after cleaning it off. What is your personal time worth to you? I’d say you could take care of it yourself in under an hour, or take it to the dealer for inspection, then back for the painting, and then back to pick it up. I pay myself too much an hour to want to spend all day getting the dealer to do it for free.

Those will be the 1st of many rust spots. It would be good to familiarize yourself with the process of inspecting the frame and dealing with these things as they come up.

Thanks for all the input! I’ll swing by the dealer and see what they say but I’m going to plan on just doing it myself.

I use Krown rustproofing yearly. When my 11 year old CRV was written off in an accident, I was able to refuse the 1st payment my Insurance company offered since I proved it was worth more!

I would recommend doing a full inspection of the frame first to see if there are any other spots before taking it in just so you can photo document it for them so they know where to check, by the way you can do a pretty easy test of the severity of rust with a ball point hammer, lightly to moderately tap (don’t hit it like your hammering a nail, you’ll probabl dent it) the spot that’s rusted to see if it will go through I would seriously doubt it will though, this is probably what the dealer is going to do and then probably spray a rubberized coating over it without removing the surface rust which will just make it worse overtime since it will continue to corrode underneath the coating.

You'll sit at the dealership for hours waiting for a two minute job.

Even if you don't have the can of black paint in the garage that almost everyone does, you're talking $3 bucks, and no more than few minutes of your time.

Don't let the dealer mess with it...do it yourself and feel better about it! Such a minor thing.

Don't waste your time at the Dealer, they are going to just spray paint over the surface rust just to get rid of you, at least you can fix it correctly

My '16 has them down the sides as well. It's basically cosmetic and that's what the dealer will tell you. I plan on painting the entire outside of the frame come spring. How are the LCAs?

Those are getting done as well.

In both pics, to the right and left of the surface rust area, on the bottom of the rail, what are those spots? They look worse than the surface rust area.

I would wire brush it really good, and spray it with flat black paint like the others are saying. Those marks look like they are from the flip up lift pads at the dealership, almost like someone placed the lip of the pad against the frame and when they lifted it, they scratched the paint off the frame.
