There are a couple of issues with just putting lexan between the grill and the sensor. You still have the plastic cover in front of the sensor and it's only has a couple of small opening that can read through. My feeling is that it will deminish the strength of the radar. The second is that the small opening will trap snow, water or mud which would also give the "clean the front sensor" warning more often. The Pro 18 has a nice flat smooth surface.

I remove the cover of my Chinese grill which was pretty easy to do. I'm betting that the new 18 pro grill cover will fit right in.

Spiffy! Did you just cut the tabs they melted then it comes off? It sure looks like that factory plexi will fill that space nicely with the sensor behind it.

I didn't have to cut the tabs. I used a sharp knife and cut the melted plastic then pushed the cover out.

The plexiglas on the front or the rear should help.....if you look at the pro grill, they still have the honeycomb design, it is just not a thick, and the plexi is covering the front, on the 17 grill, putting the plexi in the back, the sensor will still see the sharp angles of of the honeycomb. @logicmobile i think a piece of plexiglass would clear up your issue, but the dealer may have to clear the code for you 1st.

Bought a 2018 OR, pulled the grill immediately and put in a china pro grill. Got the dash warning immediately that my TSS sensor needed to be cleaned and it turned itself off. Took pro grill apart and compared to the OEM setup where TSS is buried behind the tinted logo. I added 3/32" plexi that I had my local Ace cut. I got fancy and added tint to the front of the plexi to make it look dark and "help" the sensor. Reassembled pro grill and drove......damn sensor went off again.

Took a day to two to think about things and had read others used plexi without issue. Pulled the pro grill again, ditched the tint, added a second layer of plexi to the front of the sensor. Couldnt find my double sided clear tape so I used some clear packaging tape to secure the plexi to the front of the sensor. Reinstalled and haven't had an error in weeks! Don't overthink it; yes they are amazing sensors that have great function, but a little plastis in front isn't going to mess it up. I have over 1,000 miles since the mod, utilize the adaptive cruise daily and have seen every other warning in teh right moments from the system.

    Best of luck to everyone!

Why not just buy the part for the '18 Pro Grill? I paid only $40 bucks and the result will be the same as Toyota designed it.

That's a good idea. When I did this I couldn't find a part listed. Aside from some time drinking beer in the garage this "mod" to get the sensor in cost $3 in plexi and about $0.02 in tape. If it wasn't working I would order the correct part.

really hard to see in these "progress" photos. But between the front of the sensor and back of the grill are two pieces of 3/32" secured with packaging tape. Hillbilly engineering, but it works great!
