just arrived in the Philippines for work this week and (while it is night) I must have seen 30 of the newer Hilux models (at least one was an '18 Rocco w/ the roll bars I believe) and I must say they do look much better in person than in the pics. I still prefer the squareness of my 3rd gen (sans roll bars) a lot of folks hate on these Hilux and they look pretty badass - especially a few I saw heavily modded out!

If you get a chance, please snap a picture. I’m curious what they look like without all the computer enhancements of the advertisements. Unless that is frowned upon in the Philippines. Safety first!

No chance to get a pic of the "special" Hilux here yet - everyone I've seen is hauling ass or just a base model the last couple of days. I will say the damn diesel Rangers are everywhere though and are about the size of my Taco back home. I'm not a Ford guy but these look tough as all get-out...

One thing I kept noticing was how damn clean and sparkly all of these trucks are here and then in speaking with one of my team members here locally they informed me that given Filipinos save quite extensively for their trucks and take great care to buff scratches instantly and wax nonstop. One of the girls on my team mentioned that her husband is clearly married to his truck, but lives with her. Seems pretty familiar, huh? :)

I don't think it's because safety is more strict, most don't even have airbags. My guess based on what I saw while abroad other than them liking the look, is people ride around in the back quite often and it gives them something to hold onto.

    To be announced
I spent a week in Iceland this year and everyone there drove the hilux. Let me tell you they are way nicer then the 2nd and 3rd gen tacos. There was all sorts of set ups there from the artic trucks to just typical lifts. The diesel sounded good and if I had the choice my taco would be traded immediately for a hilux.

you can blame you yanks for them. In the late 1990s people were making their own like those on your f trucks etc. Since then the manufacturers started adding them and now they are the norm. They do absolutely nothing except look good??? Made of thinest polished alloy possible you can pick them up with one finger.
I take them off - got three hanging in the roof of my garage if you want one

haha - maybe they weren't back in the 80s 90s but remember no internet back then so all we got here were your movies and TV shows. We all wanted one of those jacked up trucks with roll bars and 10 spotlights on top.

mine has 7 airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, abs, auto brake distribution. in Australia every car is given a safety ANCAP rating, if not high enough companies won't buy them.

I was in Nicaragua so not quite the same standard as Australia I'm guessing.

yeah, just shows how car companies value life. They could but "let's just make more money"

Could, But based on the area I don't think so. It's pretty poor in places and feels like automobile safety (in airbags) really isn't high on the list of importance for people there. There are basic everyday needs that need to be met first. Driving there was chaotic and nerve racking, not enjoyable like here in the states.

Even with all the craziness though I didn't see any wrecks. Could be from having to be "on" at all times while behind the wheel. I've drove in a few 24hrs of lemons races (spoof on the lemans circuit) here in the states and down there was way more intense. My main thought while driving was don't kill anyone, which is mentally exhausting after a few miles. They are used to walking in the streets inches from your vehicle and other vehicles passing squeezing through the same way at 20-30mph. Not like the states where you could cruise along and relax and maybe get distracted by sightseeing or phone.
