Ok, so trucks been parked at my buddy’s house for the last 2 years while I gallivanted around Europe with NATO. Now I’m in Keflivek on the way home and find out when my buddy went to take the truck to his dads place where I’m staying that the three hungry field mice struck and chewed up some wiring along with building a nice little romp room in the engine compartment . Toyota in Marysville, WA said I needed a whole new engine wiring harness but I’m of the mind I could maybe solder a jumper wire and do a repair. Thoughts? Also could this be the only damage or should I assume more?

Codes being thrown currently are as follows:

P0023 B - camshaft position actuator circuit open

p0348 - cam position sensor A circuit high bank 2

    p21d4 - Manufacturer control

So what is best course of action girls and boys?

If you were deployed/PCS'ed, you should talk to both your insurance company and your base's legal office. I'm sure the rules have changed since I retired, but you used to be able to file a claim for reimbursement for damaged caused as a result of the movement.

    Mice suck. Been there before.

    Sadly, not much.
I had my insurance cover the costs of rodents eating out my Knock Sensors - I was surprised that they covered 100% minus my small deductible. It was over $3k to do the work. State Farm.

it's been discussed that Toyota uses a wire insulation that is made with (i think) some derivative from soybeans, so it has a 'tasty' element. people are using eucalyptus oil or peppermint oil of even fabric softener sheets to help deter rodents from eating the wires. there is also a battery decice that emits a high frequency- called stop! mice or something like that

I know when I had mice chew my snowmobile wires up, even after I put dryer sheets trying to keep them away, they then chewed up those dryer sheets, and line their nest with bits of them in the belly pan of the sled. Its been constant war year after year with those little bastards.

We've had several feral cats in the neighborhood that were recently picked up by animal control after too many neighbors complained. Dogs are ok, but there is a big hatred for cats. It's this crazy bird lady next door with all her feeders that attract all these mice, and chipmunks. Now we got several bears that wallow through the yard every few days to get some of that seed. Its pissing me off, because they leave land mines in my yard when I mow the lawn.

Same exact thing happened to me last winter if I remember. I had the same codes, But just for the left side. I popped the hood searched for about 10 min found the chewed harness, Limped down to one of our local Toyota dealers.

They looked at it and said there guy could fix it for 600.00 by repairing the harness. Mine was chewed flush with the plug like yours. After about 2.5 hours had my truck back, tech spliced in a length of wire crimped some pins and used a new connector.

I called my home insurance company while waiting they listened to me file a claim gave me a number told me to give to service writer. When I told the service writer thats what the insurance co. wanted me to do, he declined the number. I thought man thats jacked up.
But, he had good reason to see the insurance co would have sent someone over a day later maybe. then nickle and dime'd the service writer. To do the splice the intake manifold had to be moved so the time is good at least it was for me. I paid the 600.00. when I got home filed pictures and finished the claim. Insurance co called and chewed me out for not letting them do it how they normally. I was reimbursed my entire 600.00 a week later.

Some wire insulation does have plant based materials, all wiring has a form of salt in it as well. So no matter if it has plant base in it, or not. There is salt, that's main reason they Chew it.

Is this something home insurance covers and not auto? I have to get a hose replaced on the evap system that the dealer said is rodent damage. Thanks for any info.

I believe it is part of the home owners policy for my truck,as long as it was claimed to have happened at your home.
I didn't have to pay any deductible like I would have under the comprehensive for auto. I could be mistaken but I think that's what took place for me.

Rodents chew on the craziest stuff. Had an 81 Jeep J-10 I had restored. Had the 258 6 banger in it. Had replaced all the hoses and such and it was parked under cover behind my workshop. Had maybe 500 miles on it after I was done and took it out one Sunday morning. Was chatting with a gal and she said ''your truck is smoking,'' looked around and steam is coming from under the hood. Shut it down, popped the hood, and someone with big teeth had chewed a hole in the top radiator hose. Always carry a roll of GOOD electrical tape and I wrapped the sucker up and made it home. [GOOD electrical tape will bond so well with the under layers you can hardly peel it apart] Found a woodchuck had decided to dig a hole right by the truck and you could even see his prints under the truck. He got whacked a few days later, I was hoping he'd get the staggers and croak from the antifreeze but I guess he hadn't drank any.

If it is done correctly, a splice is a completely acceptable fix for that. But, you can't half-ass it. No new harness required.
