I was using a conjuction of gaia, alltrails pro, and cached google maps but the lat/long that was mapped out just marked the road. We were attempting to bank on a campfire still being on but we got there REALLY late lol

I think it was a combination of being tired, hungry, and thirsty for some brews that made us too eager to turn out to sites before the one everyone was at.

No problem. I'm glad I remembered, even though it was like 10pm or whatever when I remembered. I forgot to get @Motofox 's buddy's number to relay the coordinates to. He find you guys ok?

If I don't snag your spot first! haha

I had sent @K_Sandhu my gaia waypoint but a) not sure if he has Gaia but also b) the waypoint was at the turn off from the main trail, I forgot to update it to the actual campsite (maybe 100-200 yards down off trail from the waypoint and around some trees).

Didn't take a lot of pics on Friday but definitely had a good time hanging out with you guys. Sorry @TOP TACO I didn't catch you guys before I left but figured it was better to leave from the area we were exploring. Looking forward to camping with you guys next time!

No need to do homework. Just get the BaoFeng listed in "products discussed" at the bottom of the page.

didn't camp so still haven't slept in it yet (day trip to meet up with the guys before heading to tahoe city for mu buddy's bachelor party that night). Just popped it open to hopefully get some decent pics for @ChandlerDOOM but also, wanted to see how much harder/easier it was to set up while at camp ... answer is pretty damn easy. though it was hot in the sun so I needed a beer break between opening and closing the tent.

Yessir, i looked at both and there are a ton of them out there. Looks like a 2x power difference between the $25 and $60, small amounts of homework have been done, still some overthinking to do lol

TBH for the type of comms we use I would assume the 5 watt would be sufficient. I just got the 8 watt because of that "just in case" ya know?

    Wrecked!
Ive had both the $25and $60 both are about the same For off road trips and will work fine for that.
If you want better get a mobile unit from a major brand. The $60 BF unit kicks ass for the price. Have talked to rio vista bridge from union valley reservoir. Oops

you should be able to hit lead and tail cars regardless with the baofengs (unless you guys are miles apart with trees/mountains between you guys). which one do you have? stock or upgraded antenna?

the UV-5, upgraded and stock antenna. I never noticed any difference from the stock to upgraded antenna besides slapping myself a few times with it.

I can typically hit lead car and back car but once we get a little distance between us its just me talking to myself.

This happened to me this weekend with @2BeersPlease and @TOP TACO taco. The more distance they got the less clear I was on comms. It could be that my antenna was facing the opposite direction or my radio/cell/etc was causing too much interference.

the nagoya ut 72 comes w/ a dongle for connecting a baofeng uv5r if someone doesn't want to buy a dedicated mobile unit yet.
