The local dealerships keep offering me $33-$35k for my Inferno DCSB OR with about 65k miles on it. I bought the taco to put 250k+ miles on it and not have a payment for 200k of those. I’m on track.

But I keep thinking… “for perhaps $5k, I could be in a zero miles OR AC”. Consider the upgrades, LED headlights and apple carplay. Throw in power seats for free because my manual seats do me just fine. Unfortunately, you can’t online build an off-road access cab in Texas zip codes, so I’m assuming I’d have to find an allocation and have it redirected, or fly to pickup. I assume a $750 round trip for flight, hotel, and gas.

I’m just trying to figure out if it’s a realistic chance to move to a new truck for $5k or less. $3k is my definite tipping point. For that little cash, I’d give up my inferno color and the cubby goodies to get into a new truck. I’d have to spend the better part of a day taking all my mods off, some of which I would probably sell to offset the difference.

Has anybody done something similar lately?

If you want a new truck, get a new truck. It's your money and no one else's opinion really matters. Remember though, the inflated market that is paying those prices for your trade is the same inflated market you will be buying into. "How much" for both ends of the deal is only speculation until you get the deal down on paper. Dealers tell you all kinds of shit to get you into the showroom.

I would seriously consider getting into the new Tundra Pro hybrid. 10 speed, 500 ft lbs torque, 22+ mpg. I definitely wouldn’t go right back into a 3rd gen going into it’s 7th year of production without a refresh. Ymmv

If you’re talking about driving 1000 miles or more I’d suggest just having the truck shipped. It can be a bit of a hassle but the time (and miles) saved is usually worth it

unless your 2018 is giving you problems, i would suggest keeping it. you have a good plan and you're on track, and there is something to be said for owning a reliable vehicle outright that you know the history of. my $.02.

Have them run the numbers, it won't be 5 grand to get into a new truck, no way. Only you can decide on more payments or not.....

Get what you want. Factor in sales tax, registration, etc. Don't get anything that has just undergone a major revision.

Let us see a pic of current vehicle. You might do much better selling outright anyways.

I would say if you could get yourself into a new Tacoma, which would be a 4-year and 65K mile upgrade, for just 5K….probably worth it.

I know my truck is worth more now than what I paid for it new.

Dont forget TTL: 5K net sticker minus trade, plus 2.5k tax @6.25%, 0.5k title = $8K, ish. Not including markup or dealer add-ons. :cookiemonster::cookiemonster:

Still, 8-10k for winding back 65k miles, that's 12 to 15 cents per mile. Not bad at all.

Put that against keeping it, lets see, you purchased it for 35... let's say it was a total cost of 45 after TTL and loan interest paid... Run the original truck for 250K miles, and your simple cost of ownership works out to 16-18 cents per mile.

I think about that one often. But I like my 2018. I'll probably keep mine for a while. Against my own advice.

Up to you, but I LOVE no payments on my 2017 with ~72k. I love my truck and it has many many more miles let in it. My $.02

BONUS - No TSS crap on these 2017

I don't doubt that at all in this market. My comment was regarding the suggestion in a post for the OP to consider the Tundra Pro Hybrid instead of another, albeit new, Tacoma. We're talking a vehicle that would sell for $30k more.

Yeah, that last part is the no-go at this point. If I had already bitten the bullet on a decent travel trailer, perhaps a bit more tipping weight on that side of the scales. But otherwise, it offers a bunch of benefits I can’t justify.

Good advice so far, on both sides. It’s basically a question of moving to a new taco. The next closest decision is waiting until the next Gen comes out. Then the decision tree is a) is it something I want, then b) Do I want first year of new model.

That's not a Pro....and you can already find them on the used market for under $60K

Hmmm ok....I just thought since it said Hybrid TRD Pro Crewmax in the description that it was a Pro. Silly me I guess.

That’s a decent analysis approach. Your 16-18 is probably closer to 14 if you figure in a $10k residual on the truck at the time of final analysis. So anything in the 12-15 range for a trade up is a win I suppose. I think I paid ~$38k all in, maybe $40k with interest over 3.5 years. That’s 16 cents per mile.

It’s really the thought of what do I want this truck to be in 10 years when I start looking at retirement and converting it to a do-all truck. It seems an access cab with long bed might do me better. And I have to admit, the AC is just a sexier truck.

I went through this with my Cayman. Bought a gently used ‘15 GTS, last of the flat sixes for the cayman because the 4 pot was out. 2 years later the 4.0L flat six was offered in the GTS. Damn. Thought I had nailed it timing the used six. Even optimistically, that was going to be a $40k upgrade cost. Optimistically. I decided I have it pretty good with what I have and still enjoy it.

The taco hasn’t let me down, even with 4K+ rpm towing a travel trailer through hills. Yeah, she sang like a scalded ape, but I’ll be damned if 3rd gear at high rpm didn’t take care of things. The latest tunes are even better. So perhaps it’s just wistful thinking about an AC in a manual that has me considering. The other detractor is getting a new one puts me on the hook when the wifey asks about hers. Ah, who am I kidding, I’d probably cave if she asked really nicely.
