I have a 2018 TRD Sport, with about 38k that is having issues with clear coat loss and paint fade on the cab. The blue is turning white, but it's not just weather, but definitely a factor defect of some sort, due to the exact square pattern of paint loss.

Took it into Servco Waipahu, and all they could due was give me the number for the local Toyota quality complaint line, due to being out of warranty. The service rep, did tell me that they've been seeing this issue come up lately, especially in a lot of the grey colors.

It'll be a shame if Toyota won't do a recall of some type on these trucks, since its obviously a defect.
I'm curious if anyone else has seen this issue in their 2018's, and if so, hopefully you file a complaint.

Unfortunately this is a well known issue in the paint that Toyota is Required to use.
They do have a recall for the WHITE Tacoma paint flaking and peeling off. (They will repaint the affected areas)
But unfortunately the fading of the paint is something that they say is out of their control due to environmental requirements and paint standards.

You might get lucky and make enough noise with Toyota to take care of your problem.
But across the board they won't do anything about it.
The paint only needs to last for the warranty period. (No paint can last forever)

I wouldn’t expect paint to last forever, but less than 5 years is ridiculous.
Something than just poor quality paint is going on, I think a factory defect in the clear coat or the shipping wrap they use.
It’s not the entire cab, and in a distinct pattern.

I agree. Paint and any coating on a vehicle in this day and age needs to last for more than 10 years. To have this issue the OP is having in less than 5 years is absurd and a manufacture issue that they should step up and pay for. I idon't have this issue on my 2018 taco, but my wife has it on her 2018 Mazda... same type of problem, and debating with company about warranty responsibilities.

I suspect that their (Toyota's) argument will be that the paint is still functioning as intended.

I do agree that it would be nice if the paint would retain it's luster and shine for 10+ years.

But getting any manufacturer to admit to something that would cause a financial loss to their company will be like pulling teeth! Especially since the paint they use is required by the EPA. (and that's what makes it so crappy!)

Plus the burden of proof will be on you to prove some type of "factory defect" beyond a reasonable doubt.
They can always claim that it was caused by some type of exposure that happened during your ownership of the vehicle. Or maybe environmental exposure beyond their control.

Sorry I understand it's not what you want to hear. But I'm just trying to give you a realistic perspective so you're not "Blindsided" If they don't correct your issue.

But good luck! I hope you actually get Toyota to do a recall.

Actually the White Tacoma's here in Hawaii are being repainted. Servco is doing this on a case by case basis.

As for the roof being repainted as Evidence of the straight line???
    That would never happen!
No autobody shop would ever tape off a diagonal line across a panel and paint it. ((A backyard "Brokanic" might.))
Not to mention it is almost impossible to do a decent touch up paint job without blending the color and paint.
It just doesn't work that way.

First and foremost, recalls are only for safety issues. The may eventually do a service campaign where they extend warranty coverage or something, however they have 0 legal right.

Do to the straight lines it doesn’t seems like any sort of paint failure in this case. I would say exposure of high intensity sunlight due to some type of reflection off a window or something else which intensifies the rays.

    You have a great point!
I would suspect that we are not getting the whole story.
Sun damage normally happens over a long period of time. Something must have been shading/preventing sun damage to that section of the roof?

Where can I find this recall documentation? My Toyota dealer said there is no known recall, or issue with the paint. But my 2018 White Tacoma, is having the paint shrink and peel around the rear door window frame.

I don't know if there is any official recall.
But my co-worker has a schedule date to have his 2016 repainted. (But Servco is only repainting affected areas of the truck) Not the entire truck. only the areas that the paint is peeling off. He is out of the warranty period but they going to repair his paint.
Like it's been said; it is a known issue. It took him a few month to hear back from Toyota but they are covering it. (The Pandora's box has been opened is it's just a matter of time)

What island are you on? Servco owns the dealership on Oahu, Big Island and Kauai. Maui Toyota is owned by the Farias Family.
