I have a 2018 TRD Sport Automatic with 1,800 miles on the odometer. There is a noise that seems to be coming from the rear end that is driving me crazy. I tried to record the sound today, but it didn't pick up on the phone.

The issue is very noticeable when you are in a very slow speed situation such as stop and go traffic on the highway or slowly making your way through an intersection. The issue exists at all speeds, but is most noticeable with sound and feel when moving very slowly.

With each rotation of the wheels there is a knocking/clanking sound. If you are riding the brakes, it will go away. I can't figure out what it might be.

I just go rid of my 2011 which never had an issue like this.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Your best bet is to take it back to the dealer since it's under warranty.

Of course, but I like to try and have an idea of what is going on before I go to the dealer.

    Many possibilities.
Could be something loose in the drum, hence when on the brake it doesnt do it.
Could be the spare tire is loose and rattling, but that doesn't account for each rotation of the wheel and it going away when on the brakes, but it is easy to reach under there and shake it to rule it out.
There are many other possibilities, hard to tell you over the internet.

The low speed clunk I notice - that sounds a bit similar - is gas sloshing/thunking around in the gas tank when the tank is 1/2 to 3/4 full. My driveway is on an incline, so I would always notice it when I backed out of the garage at low speed, then when moving in stop and go traffic. Never noticed it any other car, but I've isolated it to only happening at a certain fuel level, so I'm almost positive that was my issue.

this is good info, but OP get to the dealer since it's warranty. all you need to know is how to reproduce the sound.

I have an appointment for Sunday morning.

    The sound is rotational.

Haven't experienced the sloshing fuel sound yet in this one, but I was familiar with that from the 2011.

I'm so against the whole "it's under warranty, let the dealership find this obscure hard to diagnose noise." That's just asking for the idiots at the dealership to dick around with your truck and 99 times out of 100 they won't even fix it.

Live at the dealer. First pass they said they couldn't notice anything. Drove around the parking lot with the tech and they are taking it back in for another look. They don't know.

I hate..HATE..going to the dealership. Do they get bonuses for not figuring stuff out or for lacking customer service? Biggest scam ever.

One or both of your axles have "excessive runout" - meaning its bent. I had the same thing. At first they replaced the drums. That solved it for 400 miles and then the sound returned. They replaced the passenger side axle and I've been good for 3000 miles. Toyota is aware of the problem, my dealer told me after consulting with Toyota tech.

Edit: The sound started with 400 miles on my truck, and the axle was replaced at 1008 miles.

Thanks for the info. They are focused on the brakes right now, but run out of the axle is the sensation along with the noise.

If you have anything direct from Toyota, it would be appreciated to get a copy.

    Thanks,
    Dave

I don't have anything from Toyota other than my service record. The dealer was baffled when replacing the drums didn't solve the problem. They called Toyota for assistance, and Toyota knew what was going on and told them to check the axle run out. If they only replace the drums, get it back in there as soon as the noise returns.

Will continue to watch. Nothing replaced this time. Tech's assessment was spinning the drums by hand with the wheels off, could feel the brakes grabbing and releasing.

Drums and pads were sanded, cleaned brakes, and greased hubs.

Their assessment is that this fixed the issue. We will see.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Let them figure it out. That's why you have a warranty.

Hopefully, all worked out in the end.

It did not. Turned out that the rear axles had to be replaced under warranty for being out of spec.
