I was always curious on the big rigs, maybe the air supply system has something to do with it or could also be cost related.

No one here is arguing that disc brakes dont offer better performance. You keep missing the part where Toyota chose to use drum brakes on the rear, in order to provide the user with more durable / longer lasting brakes rear brakes.

Do disc brakes stop better than drums? Yes.

Do drum brakes out last disc brakes and require less maintenance? Yes.

The truck already stops more than adequately. It doesnt need rear disc brakes.

Here are some cold hard facts for you in regards to drum brakes:

    • Drum brakes can provide more braking force than an equal diameter disc brake.
    • Drum brakes last longer because drum brakes have increased friction contact area than a disc.
    • Rear drum brakes generate lower heat.
    • Drum brakes have a built-in self energizing effect that requires less input force (such as hydraulic pressure); thus no need for hydraulic components with an increased risk of failure / wear.
    • Wheel cylinders are simpler to recondition than with disc brake calipers.
    • Drums have slightly lower frequency of maintenance due to better corrotion / contaminant / wear resistance.

In summary, you have to look at the hole picture man.

Cant judge a football team solely on the kicker. Gotta look at the team as a whole.

All of that is great but the bottom line is cost. That's the reason. Every other off road vehicle runs rear discs.

    Out.

I've got no dog in the fight, but do you know what the cost is for disc vs drum? What are you basing your assumptions on?

These days, lots of cars are coming with disc brakes, even the lower trim models. Which, again, leads me to believe that discs would be more cost efficient. (more demand = more suppliers = more competition = lower price. Things scaled down in production tend to cost more. i.e. try to buy a cassette tape today. It costs more than a CD or a thumb drive). But I'm merely assuming this with nothing to back it up with.

Huh, imagine that...my Silverado had drums, too. Stopped just fine unloaded, loaded, or trailering...and off road.

As someone who has had to panic stop in a Tacoma, my rears locked up and modulated just fine. I don't think disc/disc would have done any different. The front is doing all the heavy lifting anyways.

Toyota did not become a segment leader by following “every other” manufacturer’s recipe.

They placed lower wear / lower maintenance / toughness over a very slight increase in stoping power that is not actually needed for the truck’s intended use.

Which is because they are way better for off road.

Aren’t drums also better for parking brakes?
Personally i couldn’t care if I have discs or drums. My truck stop just fine.

I converted my car from rear drum to rear disc and I think the handbrake holds much better on the discs.
