People need to realize damage today looks a lot worse than the Impact with all the plastic parts and thin sheet metal (loved by ding repair people) used than what was used years ago on all steel front ends, Today's vehicles fold up like an accordion if the truck hits a pile of paper cups. Always looks a lot worse than it is. My wife hit a drunk who turned in front of her. No airbags and insurance paid to fix it. $18000 damage fixed. Vehicle was four years old.

Thats one of the problems owning a Toyota, Due to the increased used vehicle value, They usually fix the damage on a Toyota which would be totaled in most any other brand.

Same comments pop up every time a wreck thread is made.

Wreck happened, crumple zones did their job, and passengers made it out unscathed without getting smacked by an airbag, I call that a win.

It all designed to absorb energy. If nothing compresses, it can't absorb and dissipate that energy...which means huge amounts of kinetic energy makes it to you! Not good

It’s a blessing everyone is fine.
Remember to file separate claim for depreciation.

In Nebraska the threshold for "totaled" is 75% of residual value (varies state by state). I had hail damage on my new WRX, cost $23K to fix, but still not totaled out. Yet I had an older WRX that was stolen and painted/damaged, and it was totaled. Don't underestimate how much repairs including painting can cost. Labor is about twice the price of the parts.

Also worth noting that brand new vehicles have lots of electronic goodies such as radar and sensors that are hella expensive to replace. So it's not just body damage that's involved.

Re' filing for depreciation loss, that's always suggested in these threads, and sounds like a great idea, but even if you or your BFF are a lawyer and you're willing to spend a lot of time and money for legal filings, it's not straightforward. Do a little research on it. Whether it's even possible depends on the laws and regulations in your state.

I personally have never known anyone to benefit from a claim for depreciation due to accident damage. As always, YMMV.

I believe if you have a lawyer and hire your own appraisal service you can come out better but most of the time they wont give you enough to compensate the perceived value/reduction of the accident.

For comparison purposes 88 s10 blazer 30mph into the side of an old 90s chrystler mini van. Notice the bumper wrapped around the frame rails.

You aren't going to get anything if the accident was your fault, and judging by the OP there was a failure to maintain a safe following distance.

I guess I'll be the first to ask - age of son, OP?

agreed but if you are not at fault then you are entitled to it. But you still wont get the real value of the loss of value.

Absolutely. Airbags to not automatically fire off in front end collisions. The sensors sense changes in inertia and at least two sensors have to trip in order for the airbags to deploy. My stepdaughter hit a tree in my wife's Subaru Impreza and the airbags did not deploy and she was un-injured. Modern cars have seat belt retractors that pull you back into the seat first before airbag deployment. It's better that they don't go off unless they really need to. I'm glad everyone is O.K.

    Ageed.

Early SRS were somewhat crude in comparison to modern systems. They reacted very 1 dimensionally...hit something....pop. Often times it didn't really matter how severe the impact was or wasn't. Those early Chrysler systems were scary at times.

To make matters worse, those early systems were designed with a 5'10" 190 lb man in mind. So when your 5'1" 100 lb wife hopped in the car and ran the seat up to the point that she was inches away from the steering wheel she became a target for the AB. The early bags deployed with huge amounts of force. Shattered faces, strained neck muscles and 1st degree burns were common.

Modern systems are far and away more advanced. The deployment is decided by many instantly calculated parameters. Gone are the days of arbitrary and often unnecessary or even dangerous deployment. Occupant weights are calculated by seat sensors, along with deceleration forces, angles, etc., etc. to vary the force of deployment.

    Al this is correct.

However that will make no difference when this thread balloons to 50 pages and the usual trolls are screaming about how fucked up Toyota is and start demanding an investigation and a recall.

I'm glad everyone is ok. I worry about this shit all the time, not just me, but for my family and friends as well.
Ever since I got my Tacoma in late June, I've been almost hit 7 times. I don't know if it's the MGM color and I "blend in", but it has made driving stressful. The last couple times I've been almost hit, a guy in a white Tundra, on a major neighborhood road, backed out of his drive way and wasn't even watching where he was going. The time before that a guy and Piece of shit old black ford truck was merging into my lane on a major street in major traffic. The guy should have waited until traffic was clear, but no. The time before that was this dude driving a big utility truck carring a heavy and huge cement ring on a trailer and was weaving in and out of lanes. I past him up and looked over and he was dicking around on his cell phone.
