2018 tacoma is suddenly a no start

My engine also tried to turn over a few times before it eventually lost the boost too and just started clicking. I’d put money on the battery.

The 3 legged stool of spark, fuel, timing is at play here.

Codes should give a clue since you've confirmed a good battery.

Faulty CPS can zilch timing

Aaaaaaaaaaand, it's the fuel pump.

Fault code P0087, Fuel Rail/System pressure too low.

Now I just have to figure out how to get it to the dealer.

There's no free tow job for this is there? I'm 20 miles from my dealer (and the closest dealer). I love living out in the middle of nowhere, most of the time.

There are various reports about the fuel pump swap affecting fuel economy. I have tracked every tank from new, so that will be fun to watch.

 

Someone should have taken me up on that battery bet, could have won some money.

 

In all fairness, the battery is frequently the culprit. Not today though.

had a rough start once on my old fuel pump. I had it replaced under warrenty back in march and I have had no issues

 

So out of the first 28 posts, 5, 8, 13, 14, 16, 17, 24 selected fuel pump.

@solarguy2003 you did a fine job with your diagnostic description and pre-post testing. Once I read that I never questioned your battery being an issue.

Find a friend with AAA and you may get your free tow. Or call the dealer and ask if they'll pick it up since it's a recall item.

Hint- if the engine turns over vigorously but the engine won’t start ITS NOT THE BATTERY.

I'll throw in a plug for the Harbor Freight Zurich 11 OBD diagnostic tool. Very straightforward to use, not limited to just domestics (like the base version, the Zurich 4), logged into the truck's OBD system immediately. Lots of features including real time data. A little over a hundred bucks.

 

Wooo Hooooooooo! Free tow if that's the cause. They have to order parts. Don't be like me, get yours done before it breaks down.

Upgraded to a red optima since batteries are apparently scarce at the time where I live. So far so good though.

 

Ok, we have a plot twist. They have replaced the fuel pump in the tank, but the truck is still in a no-start condition. Turns over great, won't start at all.

They believe the engine wiring harness is at fault, and the remedy is to replace the entire engine harness, not find the fault and just fix that wire or connection. By the calendar I'm out of warranty, but by miles I'm still in warranty (if we ignore the calendar). So the service manager is seeking approval from his district manager and some other person in the chain of command to do the replacement as a goodwill and no-charge situation. That seems very reasonable. This was their idea, I never asked for it. I didn't even know they were doing it until I called for an update. He's supposed to hear back today or tomorrow from the second guy.

They have had the truck for 8 days, and once he gets that approval (if he gets approval) then it will take another 5-7 days to get the parts and do the work. I did not anticipate this being a 2 week deal.
