How can you claim it’s incorrect when you don’t know whether or not the current head unit already meets these requirements? If you actually look them up instead of making assumptions, it’s things like screen resolution, microphone, noise cancelling, etc. Companies build products to support future features via software all the time. Toyota was a committed CarPlay partner from day 1 - watch the Apple keynote from 2014.

Look at what other manufactures are doing. Mazda is bringing it to cars as old as 2014. Ford has an dealer upgrade to sync 3 (the sync 2 screens were too small). There’s zero reason Toyota couldn’t be doing the exact same thing.

Guess we’ll find out in 6-12 months.

Either costs are really that high, or Toyota bean counters are out of touch with the aftermarket options.

<edit> Oooh, I get it. Anybody who's replacing one of these is probably doing it under insurance so ~$500 is their out of pocket. Maybe Toyota does know what they are doing.

Did you not read my post? Of course I looked it up, which is the reason why I refuted your claim as a “simple software update”. And you in this post just contradicted your claim...

The hardware could already be there. If that’s the case, it’s a software update. Not sure what’s so complicated about that.

The only hardware requirement from Apple is a special authentication chip. If someone tears apart their headunit and takes pictures of the board, I can let you know if it’s on it. The headunit needs to also running QNX.

UPDATE - DONGLE IS A BUST for my TACOMA radio - DO NOT BUY
Dongle and radio need an APK file to communicate.
There's no way to get the radio to read or execute the SKU905199.......apk file
There are no $50 short cuts... yet.
Maybe some code writter will create an APP in the app store.

Hanbaili Link Dongle Auto Link Dongle Universal USB White Smart Navigation Player Smart Link Apple CarPlay
Let me know if anyone else finds better/cheap solution for the Apple Phone.
On to install my new lift kit tomorrow :) UCA Camburg 1.25/Freedom Coil Overs 2.5"-5" and replace the needle bearing with the East Coast bearing fix.

I would prefer Android Auto not a fan of Apple.

I believe it “could” happen as a software update...but probably only for Entune premium systems leaving us with entune plus and base models out in the cold. With that said:

Toyota has never promised car play or android auto with systems running entune 2 or less. If it happens, it would be a welcome surprise but don’t start counting them chickens just yet. My opinion... we aren’t getting it.

Totally agree as there will be people that trade just to get it. I have had it in the past and until it’s totally wireless it’s just no big deal. I only used mine 2-3 times in a years time.

I’ve never had it so I don’t miss it. It would be welcomed though as a feature I may or may not use. If it happens, great!! If not, well, it will be there on my next truck. Not gonna throw a hissy kicking and screaming cause toyota decided us Tacoma owners aren’t worthy....
