Updates are free so why are they charging you for it? Or is this a tech doing it on the side?

It might have been a radio software update?
I was told that my radio is on an older version.

From the update website (https://securedp.toyota.com/download-app/getUpdates), it looks like you are on the current version. But, I was told that there is another version past 010192. 01019E is the latest.

I totally wish I had CarPlay. My girlfriend has it in her near base model Kia, so it’s a shame we don’t have it in a truck literally twice the price. Not a deal breaker by any means, but would have been something I considered standard at that price. It’s a decent head unit that’ll definitely do the job but it could always be nicer.

I thought that as well but when i was talking with someone from Toyota about an entune issue I had she said there was a newer version.
When I go in for my 30k I’ll ask about it.

I had the whole screen go black then come back. Also randomly calls would come in, phone would ring and the screen would show “call in progress” .....while still ringing and no buttons on screen to answer or hang up. Definitely weird.

These look like the top of the line options and probably have more than you want, $1200-$1300.
I did see cheaper ones for around $700.

I'm 99% sure they don't know what they are talking about, but I'd love to be proven wrong!

You guys know the 18 Camry and sienna have entune 3.0 head units. The Tacoma has 2.0. You cannot get CarPlay/Android auto in 16-19 tacos on the oem head unit. It’s hardware doesn’t support it

This has come up before. You can't upgrade a pre-2020 Tacoma for CarPlay and Android auto.

In the previous case, the service advisor was wrong and apologized to the poster for being a complete idiot.

@Sam275 Well, now you gotta do it.

Question for those with a 2020 Taco, is the CarPlay wireless or do you have to use a cable?

Do you have a link for that thread I’m pretty sure that’s what’s going on here. I tried searching and no dice on my end.

Wireless CarPlay is done by having the headend unit has a WiFi Radio, it even will broadcast an SSID, which will join in the Apple app. I thought CarPlay could just be a software upgrade, but it’s software and hardware. Wired CarPlay requires USB 2.0 connection.
My 2017 premium audio had neither. I finally replaced it all.

Just spoke with a different service advisor today (same dealer) and he stated the previous gentleman misspoke on the issue. So that’s that. Sorry for the added confusion to everyone. Time to go after-market when I get the scratch together.
