So I just got a 2018 toyota tacoma 4 cylinder and now second guessing my choice. I love the truck. I don't haul or pull anything. Just drive it work and wanted the bed to move around stuff. The v6 is 6k or 7k more. Didn't want a high payment. Any other tacoma 4 cylinder drivers out there. How are u liking your tacoma.

I second guess the people that wake up in my bed. I never second guess my truck choices.

My 01 has the 2.7L 4 cyl 4 door. Amazing. My 17 Pro has the lethargic V6. I like them each for different reasons.

    Good luck.

I’ve been there.... i didn’t have the money for the v6 or higher trim... be happy that you have a truck that will last forever... I’m even thinking about my son driving it for school one day.. (he is not born yet) I would have loved to drive a truck like that to school/college..

I’ll keep it and won’t sell it... it will become my workhorse one day.. but not yet...

Don’t be shy to floor it... play with the gear selector... 3rd is “peppy” above 2500...

I’ve been very happy with my 2016 4 cyl, but that is with the 5 speed. Yeah, feel free to floor it, it’ll be fine. Like you, I don’t tow, and don’t haul a ton of weight, it’s an adventure truck. Also didn’t want to pick up the higher payment for the v6. Take the truck out there and enjoy it for what it is.

I own the 4 banger SR. If you want power, look elsewhere. Other than that it's been great. It WILL get up and go, but by no means does it get your heart pumping.

If you don't tow you don't need the V6 and even if you tow you'll want more than the V6 (Tundra).

Yes the truck is probably just right for me. I tried the GMC canyon and was ok it's very nice. But when I sat the the tacoma, I was this is my truck. Something about it just seemed more manly lol.

I have a 2017 SR 4cy AC but I have the 5 speed. Like others have said the 4 banger is just fine for what it is. Sometimes I drive it like an old man and sometimes I drive it like I stole it and it does both well. Give your truck a chance and customize it to your liking and you will be happy. I could have bought an OR or a Pro but I wanted SR.

I love my 2017 4-banger MT Taco. Doesn't feel under-powered, and I like that the torque curve peaks at lowish RPM, unlike the V6 which needs to be wound up.

I absolutely love my truck, but of course the MT helps a lot with that. It's underpowered at high elevation, but fairly peppy where I live (IMO).

I like simple vehicles, and this one is just that relative to its V6 counterpart.

I have an 09 4 banger with 230k miles on it and love it. The 2trfe is a bullet proof motor and arguably more reliable than the 4.0 and 3.5. I havent had any issues with mine, still purs like a kitten.

If you feel like its lacking power, you can always regear it and that should help quite a bit. Drive the hell out of it and dont be afraid to let it turn some revs. My truck comes alive at about 3500rpms. Another mod you can look into is LCE headers, ive heard great things about those providing a little more low end grunt.

Tell me more about how my V6 needs to be wound up lol. I never talk about the 4cyl because I don't own one.
Now, I am tuned so that makes a difference in mid range torque.

My biggest complaint is the electronic throttle lag...and the clutch accumulator...and the long-throw shifter. :frusty:

You should look into getting a sprint booster.. helps eliminate the throttle lag from fly by wire. A guy i worked with had one on his fj and he loved it

Dude, 3 out of 3 of your complaints are the same for me (although I don't mind the shifter too much). OVtune removed most of the throttle lag (it's never going to be completely like a cable IMO), and when my warranty is up that accumulator is going bye-bye. There has already been some talk about rigging a bypass on a third gen, but I don't think anyone has actually done it yet IIRC. It just takes most of the feel out of the clutch, at least it does on the 6 speed equipped trucks.
