If it’s a drivability issue you’ll get a loaner. I’ve had a loaner for less. Call corporate.

The odd thing about this is the irregularity of the "ticks". It's seemingly totally random. If it were something like a vacuum pump or injector cleaners, I'd expect it to be more regular-- like "tick tick tick tick". Instead of "tick..tick tick......tick tick tick..tick tick.....tick".

Tried it, no real difference for me. Some days it likes to rattle, some days it doesnt. It's loud enough that people on a sidewalk would notice.

That should be when the car is off right?

I’d get it in there ASAP, or get an extended warranty, if you were considering that.

Does the ticking/rattling noise sound like its coming from inside the driver side dash? Does it happen when you are accelerating around 1,000 rpm? I may have a fix if that is the case

No it’s definitely coming from the passenger wheel well no noise in the dash but what is the fix for the dash noise? I’m guessing that would be blower fan related

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
my 17 "ticked" loud as hell when newer -- amazingly after 19K --I hardly ever notice it. It did get significantly quieter. Who knows why?

I agree, please let us know how it goes, I’ve had no luck getting the dealer to investigate it much, they acknowledge the noise it makes and even ran it past Toyota technical support for review and the only thing they come back is that they are aware of the complaint which they admit is common but it is the result of normal operation for these engines.

All Taco's seem to have a Tick...But do 1st and 2nd Gens have the Fuel Injection Cleaning Cycle Feature ??
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/cold-start-engine-noises.582439/

If you want to Demo a noise then take it under to an Underground Parking structure/under a Bridge/Tunnel/ or a Road/FWY/HWY with a long row of Jersey Barriers. You'll want to Scout out an area with these before hand. It'll make it stress free and the Mechanic wont be able to deny the sound & say he didn't hear anything!! Make sure you're driving too

I have a 1st Gen and have a slight tick sound & it always gets quieter after an Oil change or after using 91 octane or adding gas or fuel injector treatment or doing the Seafoam Cleaning.

as far as the TSB on the Funny Acting Tranny, I've heard the Tranny still acts funny after the Fix.

Seems like Owners of the new Taco either are in love with it, Or they are complaining about the same issue's everyone on this Thread are Talking about.

@phoenixpiole looks like this thread died out a while back, but do you still feel like you hear the ticking. I just noticed it in my truck the other day after driving around for a long time. Like you mentioned, happens low in the RPMs while accelerating.

Seems like most responses are that it’s normal, so I’m hoping that’s the case. If it’s normal though, you’d think more people would be responding saying they hear it.

I believe the sound is normal for these trucks due to the direct and port injection systems, dual over head cams, high pressure fuel pump as well as the variable valve timing, just a heck of a lot of moving parts which are bound to make some sort of audible ticking sound, especially at idle, the sound never went away for me, I got used to it over time.

I have same issue on my 2019, its unacceptable for me. Been working on motors since 1977. Went to dealer and mechanic clearly heard the one lifter tapping and agreed it's not right. So I left it for several days for toyota to come back and told me it's normal come pickup vehicle. Meanwhile before bringing my truck to dealer I have a engine stethoscope. Went around the entire motor until I was over the middle cylinder on passenger side bam you can clearly hear lifter rapping on top of the valve. So when I was talking to the mechanic I told him I have a stethoscope if you want to hear the exact lifter , he said no I can hear it clear!!!! So now I will pickup truck and replace myself and document what I do step by step and being back to dealer. Which involves pulling air intake, pulling vavle cover, removing one lifter and shim and replacing both even though i know it's the shim I will replace both while I have it apart. Then reassemble. The mechanic himself told me what he would do and it was exactly what I explained, but then he said toyota would rather replace the entire head for a couple of $1000.00 instead of a couple of$100. And as far as vacuum pump there is a clear difference in the sound that makes and the same for the fuel pressure system. Sum it up - play in between a lifter and valve train!!!!!! Goodluck!

Buy yourself an engine stethoscope and you will change your tune. A vavle tapping has a distinct sound. And as for the fuel injection cleaner as some people are mentioning that comes on for a few seconds and turns off and you cant it that unless you are under the vehicle. The lifter is coming from the middle cylinder on passenger side clearly not the back one or the front one or from any where else. A stethoscope allows you to hear all the bearings spinning , and any other noise in the motor from top to bottom!!!!! Buy one it's cheap and tell alot of stories on what's going on with a motor. Been using one for 35yrs!!!

Thank you for the feedback, seems to be a recurring issue on newer models with the 3.5L V6 I believe the vacuum / HPFP pump is controlled by a camlobe, it would be interesting to find out if the pump is causing damage to the cam.
