Like the title says, I have a 2018 OR and I swapped the stock grill with a Pro Grill. Now my cruise control occasionally works, but often when using ACC, it beeps and fails and tells me to clean the sensor. It has done this since I swapped grills. Sometimes it works fine, but usually it will eventually fail. I can't turn it back on until I stop and turn the truck off, then it usually works again until it fails again.

Any thoughts on how to fix this? Would it need to be recalibrated at the dealer?

More than likely it will need calibration. I have a pro grill on my truck. At the time the calibration tsb/recall came out, I didn’t have the plastic garnish that covers the sensor. So they calibrated it as it was. Not long after I bought the oem garnish from my local dealer and installed. Ever since, it does what yours is doing. So yes a recalibration I believe is in order for the both of us.

Did you install the garnish? If not, I would buy a garnish to protect the expensive sensor that is not suppose to be directly exposed to the elements. If you have the garnish installed, make sure there is no play in it or very little.

If there is no play in the garnish (doesn't tilt back and forth easily) I would take it to an accommodating dealer. I used the OEM grille and garnish and my dealer had no issue with it. If you haven't had the recall performed on the radar system, I would have that done. If you've already completed that, I would talk to your service advisor about the situation. Only solution other than a dealer visit is going back to the original grille.

I bought a cheap grill from Toyota ProShop. The section where the garnish goes was glued/melted in place. So I had to remove that to install the garnish. It messed up the two side mounting holes so I didn't put any screws there. Only used the top mounting screw which seemed solid. Had intermittent/randomly occuring issues with the radar error message telling me to either clean the sensor or that it was not available. I think my error messages occurred with the sensor slightly bumping around. My kit only had accommodations for the top mounting screw on the sensor, not the two others on the sides to hold it solidly in place. So I added two bolts, washers and some flat nuts in the empty holes. It solved my issue.

Yeah, the garnish is in pretty tight. I can't imagine that there's any play with it. Maybe I'll see if the dealer will look at it. I bought the extended warranty and the truck is new enough that its still under the factory warranty. I did have the sensor replaced under warranty when my old grill was still on.

No. I got it from Mad Hornets. The garnish looks OEM, though. If I remember correctly, it said Toyota on it and looked OEM, but I dont know where they get them from.

Something get stuck between the sensor and garnish? The only time I have that issue is when the garnish is dirty.

I can't imagine. It was a very tight fit and done in a clean environment. I'm wondering if it just needs recalibration. It usually works, but eventually fails after driving with it on for a while.

Was having the same issue and searched high and low on forums to solve the issue. Everyone said the same thing. To shim the sensor's top screw with a few washer (mine used 4, 1/4" shims). Well it still was doing as you described. Come down to it I just ordered a garnish to replace the little from insert that is Infront of the sensor, and bam problem solved as of now. Just took my 30 minute drive to work and had Cruise control on the whole time without a hitch. The real test will be running the errands after work today.
