Just put my brand new snow tires/rims on my 2018 Taco. Unfortunately I have been told I now must visit the dealership so that they can "register" the snow tire TPMS sensors with the vehicle (yes I followed the general rule of turning the truck on and depressing the TPMS reset button but do not get any tire pressures indicated). I have 2 questions that I am seeking some help with.

    1. How many sets of tires/rims does the Taco remember...in other words am I going to have to visit the dealership again in the spring when I take thge snows off and put the All Season's back on the truck??

    2. Is there a way for me to "register" the snow tire TPMS sensors with my truck without having to visit the dealership.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Did you get new TMPS sensor for the new wheels? If not, the reset button should have worked for you. You do have to hold it down and then go for a short drive.

TechStream can program sensors. You'll need a Windows computer and cable though.

The Carista app said that it added TPMS programming support. I have yet to check it out and my subscription is up soon. You'll need a BT OBD adapter for that.

Yes when I bought the truck with All Seasons on it I also purchased snow tires on rims with new TPMS sensors. I will check into the carista app. Thanks

How many miles have you driven with the new set? Some vehicles take a few miles to register. If you haven’t driven at least 50 miles I’d wait and see if it recognizes. I haven’t changed tpms sensors (changed wheels and tires but kept OEM sensors) on the Tacoma but have on other vehicles.

It’s true. They have to put the TPMS sensor ID numbers into the TPMS computer. You can do it yourself if you have TechStream on your laptop and an Tactrix OBDII adaptor. The Tactrix adaptor comes with the Orange Virus tuning package, so that’s just an added benefit of having it.

The computer only remembers 4 sensors at a time. Each time you change tires out, you’ll have to have the sensors reregistered.

Yeah, I think you will need to register the new sensors. I believe the computer can only store one set but could be wrong about that.

Thank you all for the answers. Will see just what the dealership will charge me to do the reprogram. If it is too much I may just live with the TPMS warning light for the winter months as an option.

Only 4 sensors can registered with 3rd Gen trucks.

You will need Techstream to register the sensors and a Tactrix cable. You can download a free version of Techstream that works no problems.

You will need to know the sensor IDs before installing them in the wheels. Or you can ask your tire shop to try to retrieve the IDs using a special scanner tool.

I also highly recommend you do not visit the dealer. My local dealer quotes me $140 for each sensor being programmed.

Second gens, at least 2012+ also only had 4 sensors.

The spare tire TPMS was eliminated I think in 2010 but I could be wrong on the dates.

Ridiculous that they'd charge that much but I guess they call them stealerships for a reason..
