I work in automotive crash safety and I'm all for these new features. Seat belts and airbags were the last features that really had an impact on passenger safety. Since then the death toll has been hovering around 30k people/year. Active safety is really the only way to get these numbers down close to zero. I love my Tacoma in part because it's a simpler vehicle, but the public health concern of automobile crash deaths is a real one.

You should expect these active safety measures to become part of the regulations that all new automobiles have to abide by. Passive safety can only do so much, at some point you have to let the computer do some thinking to help eliminate some of the human error.

And do what with it? Purposely crash you? The CIA can't legally operate in the US. And if they did, they aren't coming after your average citizen. You can enjoy your tin foil hat, I will live my life.

Initially they do add cost, yes, but at some point the cost goes down. I think other factors like inflation are stronger drivers of vehicle cost.

From that article-- "Here's the simple truth. No hacker has ever taken remote control of a stranger's car. Not once. It's extraordinarily difficult to do. It takes teams working full-time to find a way to do it."

Technology absolutely makes us safer. I ain't denying that. Just don't leave any backdoor open when implementing these safety features.

Hack my car... I would love some hacked up software mod to turn on the rear vent with AC (it works with heat) and remove I "heart" Radio and Slacker Radio off my station mode.

I don't know what car you bought, but my wifes 17 RAV4 has safety sense and all these features you describe. I agree with everything you posted except for the cruise part. On the Rav4 if you hold down the set button for 1.5 seconds you get regular cruise control. If you don't have a Rav, or a toyota, ignore, but I would bet your car has a similar bypass. Maybe not, but thought I'd mention it.

AMEN!!!! I've damn near been ran off the road so many times by ass clowns with their side mirror monitering BS, because they only look for the light and not actually in the mirror to see I'm 3' from them going 12mph faster.

    You guys are nuts.
    I welcome this technology.
I'm a good, attentive driver. I'm disciplined about driving distracted. Haven't had an accident in over 20 years.
I've had several close calls though, most of which were influenced by reaction time. No doubt these kinds technologies would have made those close calls less close.
Sure, they may save a distracted driver, but I want all the odds I can get.

You guys are literally arguing the same thing that kept seatbelts and pop out glass out cars till the sixties.

"If people just knew what they were doing and drove properly they wouldn't get in accidents".

    Ludicrous.
