i also have a 2018 and other than the weird shifting which doesnt seem to bother me, no issues here. Other than the recall on the fuel pump...

Thanks for all the replies. Which is why I posed the questions in the first place; the members on here are actual owners/users and have everyday real world experience with this specific subject. I assumed I would get these type of, don't worry about it responses. But who knows, sometimes these reports are stemming from more worrisome information. Thanks again TW.

I have an '18 auto. It's not a ZF8 or anything, but it is 100% fine. It's been great for me, I see no reason to get rid of it.

I read a few articles citing Consumer Reports about some problems with the model year I have. They ended up reading more like scare tactics and click-bait (in the end). But I thought instead of just going off of some random internet article I would also ask actual owners and get their opinions.

The online propaganda against 3rd gens is analogous to the current world situation. Say some BS just to get the clicks and views and it somehow snowballs like some positive feedback loop until the nonsense is assumed to be truth. "Oh I saw a facebook video of some chinese guy falling ill in the street...shut all of earth down" (probably a clip of some drunk guy from 2018). "Oh motor-lamo magazine posted another video showing how in fact the mini cooper is the superior pickup truck vs. the tacoma. What with the shifting issues and old design, the mini has apple play so it's obviously best".

Don't be daft. It's a toyota truck with one of the most boring toyota motor and transmissions made. Tell ya what, change the oil only ever 20,000-30,000 miles and do absolutely nothing else to the truck. If it breaks down before 300,000 miles i'll buy you a Ridgeline or ....mini cooper.

    Total printed BULLSHIT.

There is so much absolute crap in the media. You should not believe straight up about 50% of it. The other 50% doubt heavily.

Yea.............like "The Toyota Tacompa is an affordable pickup which offers trim levels that are excellent for off-roading exhilarating......"

Generated in China would be my guess.

I was just about to write something about that. How to you misspell the topic of the article. Do you not have spell check or proof read your work?

Aren’t the 2016-2020 models basically all the same despite the addition of some tech features? Seems pretty stupid they would recommend a 2019 but tell you to stay away from a 2018. Besides power seats, it’s exactly the same truck!

My 2018 has been rock solid except for TSS and fuel pump recall. I love this truck, it gets better and better with age. I would say no to extended warranty.

Same here about 38k miles. Just did the OVTune for towing purposes and it is amazing the differences in the transmission shifting.

My dad had a 2018 SR5 and had zero issues and it was one of the best driving Tacomas that I've been in. I didn't bother to read the article, since most of those are just based on another article already out there that doesn't provide any concrete numbers to support their claims. If their source was Consumer Reports then I wouldn't put much stock in it. If I'm not mistaken, any complaint is a knock against reliability. The transmission is a perfect example of that. But, just because people don't like the way it shifts, doesn't mean it's unreliable. If anything, it seems that the transmission has proven to be very reliable in these trucks.

Bro, this ain’t “the media.” It’s just “media,” like the stuff you use for your art projects.
This. Vet your source and its “container.” We only get bullshit like this because a ton of people aren’t very good at critical thinking and because the internet monetizes traffic and ad revenue. Also, automobile “journalists” are almost never real journalists. And probably some other stuff too. After all, everyone knows the worst Tacombva is the 2004.
