So I was driving down the freeway at around 7pm when I crossed a pretty dark section of the road (lack of street lights). There were a few cars on the road so it wasn’t pitch black. Anyways, the small info screen started beeping showing a red “STOP” sign. Scared the crap out of me, I thought I was going To hit a car or animal but there wasn’t anything in front of me.

Im curious if this has happened to anyone? I wonder if the combination of the dark road with lights from other cars made the system believe there was a car in front of me?

That would be un-nerving for sure.

I had an experience like this with my wife's Volvo. I was on an interstate at night and all of a sudden the instrument cluster panel went dark. Gauges, spedometer, everything...even the dash lights. Turns out this was a known glitch that Volvo knew about but wanted to fleece their customers for over $1,000 for an update that may or may not work. The other option was $3k-$4k for an entire instrument panel replacement. I ended up just living with it. It only happened 4 times in 13 years of ownership, but it's un-nerving as hell when it happens. The only car I've ever owned that has ever done that. Guess what car brand I'll never buy again. o_O

One of the things I like best about my 2013 is that it doesn't have any automated BS. I plan to hold onto it as long as possible.

I didn’t mind it until now.
My post isn’t even a compliant, just curious as to what the heck happened. It’s scary to think it might be a glitch or something. I was just about ready to slam on my brakes when I realized there was nothing infringe of me.

My old ‘98 outback would do that after it had rained. That was a fun one the first time it happened. Funnily enough, I could fix it by banging on one certain spot above my left knee.

I thought the truck is braking by itself if radar detects something. Is the TSS just a heads-up info? My wife does the same thing but very loud.

To be honest I don’t know how it even works. Mine didn’t brake on its own. Maybe it’s a preliminary warning before taking matters into its own hands if it realized the driver isn’t stopping?

I was actually planning on putting a big piece of carboard in an empty parking lot and ramming into that to see what it does lol.

There is a TV show called Motorweek and they have a giant inflatable balloon with the rear end of a car painted on it that they use for testing automatic braking.

Did you buy a $36,000 piece of machinery and not bother with the manual? :D

Exactly why I love my '17. Same body but without the BS.

Yes awhile back another memeber posted about how his toyota (not a Tacoma but with TSS) slammed on brakes for a piece of wood in the road that wouldn't have caused any harm or he wanted to power through (can't remember) but the car decided it was gonna stop and well almost caused an accident. I can easily see shadows and other things causing the system to engage when you don't want it.

I moved into my 2012 from a 2015 Honda Accord EXL that had all the bells and whistles. Had to have a truck to stop towing the boat with my wife's Buick Enclave. Drooled over '17s / '18s / TRDs but didn't need all that and wanted to keep the price down. Anyway I thought I'd miss all that automated stuff, all the nice touch screens, all that technology. Have had the truck for a couple months now and surprisingly I don't miss all that crap. Sometimes things can be TOO automated, or the technology is so advanced that you can't even understand what's happening any more as the operator. God I sound old, but I do love my truck.

TSS uses a single lens camera in addition to MM wave radar...
