2018 TRD Sport, getting 9mpg, super rough idle, terrible noises, and Toyota told me not to come back

I mean, that thought rolled around my head too, but felt a little too conspiracy theory for me to want to go with it as a primary idea. I feel like they just didn't like my attitude when I didn't accept their diagnosis, and now it's probably just a bit personal. I had a pretty insane conversation with the manager of the second dealership I tried to go to.

To the point of having to call Toyota Canada, and them telling me I should maybe just go figure it out myself, but the guy I was talking to broke from the script before hanging up and said this really sucked and he hoped I had a better rest of my week

    What are your fuel trims?
    Long term?
Short term at idle and driving?

Also, forget about getting a “tune”.
You’re wasting money. A good time won’t fix a “bad” truck.

    Missing isn’t normal.
RPMs that fluctuate greatly with no change in in acceleration are not normal.
Your MAF data is not normal.
High side fuel pressure should be between 260-400 psi. Not 1050 psi.

I personally think you need to find a better shop with better techs to help.
    Your truck has issues.

thanks! Feels like there’s going to be a fair bit of work involved but I hope I can get the gremlins out of this truck!

I agree! I'll take a couple pics and videos of my obd2 numbers at idle and driving tomorrow and post a google drive link. I definitely need to find someone better to deal with this, but at this point it's hard to even tell them where to start to look. I'm not totally sure what to say is the problem exactly, because there are so many, and I don't want to just overwhelm them with a list of 100 problems to fix. Very open to suggestions on how to approach a shop with this truck, because clearly my approach with Toyota failed miserably

I’d start with the MAF, fuel pressure, and the cause of the miss.
The transmission isn’t going to know what to with erratic data.
So I’d worry about that later.

I love it, some clear direction, thank you! I’ll figure out how to check the maf (already cleaned it with maf cleaner) and ask my mechanic to check the hpfp and fuel pressure regulator? As for the miss I’ll have to do a bit more reading, but could a clogged cat do that? With my cat temperatures so different I’m thinking that’s probably somehow involved either as a cause or symptom no?

Letting them ride with you (if that is an option at the time) so you can point out what you're experiencing as it is happening might help them understand as well.

A miss that isn’t fixed can cause a cat to be damaged.

A big help would a data log.
If possible, post up a log. That would help a lot.

Did you buy it from NEW WEST TOYOTA by any chance? I had terrible experience with them, total scumbags.

Do you have access to techstream?

Question I have is why did you buy this truck in the 1st place. I would think anyone would take a test ride first to find out what their getting into.

I'd also do a really good visual inspection of the wiring under the dash and hood. This is a spitball, but there's always a chance that the previous owner had some aftermarket off road goodies, or anti theft device installed. When these are removed, the repair wiring can sometimes be less than perfect. See if the factory wire loom looks like it's been re-taped or looks less than perfect. See if there's any evidence of rodents chewing wires.
I agree on first finding the reason for the high fuel pressure and miss, then move on from there.
For comparison, my daughter has a (V6) 2020 TRD Off Road, all stock, and she gets right at 20 mpg on the highway.
My 2014 TRD OR (V6) gets about 18 mpg on the highway, running 265/75-16 Falken Wildpeaks.

FWIW, I’ve got smoke too if I open my oil filler cap after driving the truck. My buddy bought a brand new MT Tacoma and his does same thing.

I checked other buddies 2019 AT Tacoma and his had no smoke. I think it’s a manual only type thing.

His idle MAF is normal, within specs outlined in service manual.

Toyota Canada will be of no help.

Source: I have a truck that feels like I get rear ended every time I stop with the transmission thump. Among several other issues you describe. Truck takes off in 2nd gear at least once every time I drive it. I bought the truck new. Dealer insists normal operation, Toyota Canada refers me to the dealer and the cycle repeats. My warranty expires in a month. Thanks for the help, Toyota.

You are the first person I’ve heard with the same complaint I have about how shitty it drives after rolling on the highway awhile. Once I’m back in the city the the truck feels like a herky jerky lethargic mess. Best of luck if you get this solved please let us know!

Yep, I had exact experience but that was a minor leather seat issue.

Long story short, I wasn’t happy with some “rippling” on the passenger seat of my brand new truck, it looked worn. Was a big mistake trying to get them to “fix it”. They ended up overstretching the seat covers, basically leather is torn a bit all around the threads, and the rippling looks way worse. Took them like 3 tries… I should’ve just left it alone.

Corporate was absolutely useless, even though I told them numerous times that they damaged the leather and it looks worse than it did.

    Aftermarket wheels...that's it.
Can't speak to your high fuel pressure issue, but agree it needs addressed first.

But a lot of the other symptoms you describe sound very much like a vacuum leak. I realize there are a lot of vacuum lines to check, but that's where I'd be looking after sorting the high fuel pressure issue.

I'd talk to a lawyer, too. You have a warranty; the dealership needs to honor it, especially when there are known, provable issues (fuel pressure three times higher than spec.)

I feel for you. I hope you can sort out your truck.

Long story, and I did have a test drive, but clearly not long enough, nor was the truck hot which is when a lot of the problems seem to present themselves most. But I was in a tough spot and needed a truck asap for work, and just never saw this amount of hassle coming. Totally on me, I get it, now I unfortunately just have to try and deal with it

Yeah I’ve been feeling like it’s a weird one off problem too! I’ll definitely let you know if I find anything. Does your truck also show Evap leak test failed?
