All this might not add up to much on its own, but combined with my ridiculous gas mileage, rough running engine, high fuel pressure, misfires and loss of power, i thought the engine sounds could mean something. I’ve definitely been wrong before though, so sorry if my suggestions are just a waste of time, I’m just trying to look at all of the puzzle pieces together I guess

The Tacoma has two different ticks that are considered normal.
One from the vacuum pump and one from the fuel pump. Both are healthy when not loud.
The automatic tacomas with the crawl control have a different vaccum pump than the manuals. They are electronically actuated and controlled.
Whereas the manuals are on demand actuated based on engine driving condition/rpm.
Vaccum pump: toyota is getting real smart on what they consider defective now. If it makes some noise without drivability concern then it’s most likely a pass for them. This happened to me at a what I’d consider a good dealer.
I have a noise vaccum at idle and when I press the brakes only. Press the gas and the knocking/clunking noise goes away since the brakes aren’t being boosted by the pump anymore.
    Fuel pump:
Sounds like the controlled parts of the fuel pump have become defective or failed and it’s probably shooting too much fuel. Would explain the crappy MPG and rich condition..
usually when the fuel pumps fail they knock and chirp loud. Luckily the vaccum pump on the manuals is right next to the fuel pump so it requires some careful listening.

Do you mean the high pressure one? Because there’s that super loud sound from the tank as well in one of the videos there. I’ll post it again in one sec for you. And thank you for that reply, I’ll definitely get my mechanic to check and/or replace that

Glad to share my experiences. And yes the HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) on the passenger side of the engine. The fuel pump in the gas tank powers everything though. If that fails then the HPFP won’t run either.

High pressure fuel pump normal pressure is between 2 and 25 MPa (~300 psi to 3600psi). The pressure is based on the injection mode and engine load dependent.
Not sure why you think it should be 50-300

I think I made a mistake there, on my mechanic's scan tool it showed a target low fuel pressure of about 50, so I think that's where I got that number from. The high target pressure says it should be 343.6 and the actual pressure was 1051.2
Totally willing to accept that I don't know what I'm talking about here. I can't find any information on this online anywhere

I’d take it by Overland Outfitters in Surrey/cloverdale and let them check it out. They only work on Tacomas, Toyota stuff.

Thank you, I think if my much closer mechanic can’t make any headway in a day or so I’ll definitely do that. Driving long distances really isn’t fun right now, so trying to avoid highway driving if I can, plus I’m 9000km away from my power train warranty expiring which might matter if I can get Toyota to deal with me again

There's always more to the story. But, all we can really do is try our best to help OP since clearly they aren't planning to.

Without being there to also hear it, to me it sounds almost like some sort of pressurized leak. There is an EVAP pump that is known to periodically run after the truck is shut off, but that doesn't sound like this to me.

Initial impression is that it sounds like power steering noise. Is your fluid topped off? I haven't paid enough attention to see if mine makes this noise as well, but I've had other vehicles do it. Also, something to keep in mind: the truck will bump up the RPMs on its own when idling and running the AC or putting in steering input just to help with the power. I mention it simply because some can be concerned the first few times they deal with it.

    Lots-o-stuff

Since you stated that the low pressure fuel pump has been replaced under the recall, I suspect that something wasn't
reassembled properly and you have a pressure leak. As they say, always go back to the last thing that was touched.

It definitely does this too, but i sort of had a feeling that it was related to the extra power requirements, and a quick google confirmed that one

That's totally normal state. Targeted pressure does not match actual.
Here is the data from "healthy" engine

To me the engine sounds perfectly fine, no worse than my truck. I’ve also got same “hissing” sound at the back of the truck.
